CARBONDALE \u2013 West Scranton\u2019s brother combination of Austin and Jonye Sostre was dynamic, and Kaz Colbert flashed his explosiveness for the second straight week.<\/p>\n
Each athlete made key plays, and No. 10 West Scranton earned a 25-20 win over Carbondale Area in a physical battle Friday between two of this early season\u2019s bright surprises.<\/p>\n
Austin Sostre, the much-talked-about freshman quarterback, completed 9 of 16 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown in his second career start.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am playing with my brother, and it is an unreal experience,\u201d Austin Sostre said. \u201cFor us to keep coming back and fighting is insane. We have Kaz, who is a go-getter of the ball. We have Quincy Mosely, another speedster. My linemen were blocking tremendously.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just have to give my credit to the linemen and my guys who were making the plays.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jonyae Sostre, a physical runner with a burst of speed, contributed 111 yards rushing and 65 yards receiving with a pair of touchdowns.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a lot of adversity,\u201d Jonyae Sostre said. \u201cWe had to battle to get this win.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not overshadowed, Colbert hauled in four passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. He also intercepted a pass in the end zone, halting a Carbondale Area scoring threat late in the third quarter.<\/p>\n
Then, his 50-yard touchdown reception provided the Invaders a 25-14 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is great,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t get what we wanted the last couple of years, so this is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
West Scranton\u2019s playmakers responded to a challenge by Carbondale Area, which had a couple of big plays.<\/p>\n
Carbondale Area took a 7-0 lead on Francisco Roman\u2019s 13-yard run with 4:27 left in the first quarter.<\/p>\n
After West Scranton tied the game on a 29-yard touchdown reception by Jonyae Sostre, Carbondale Area\u2019s Caedon Voglino returned a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. It was the second straight week the Chargers\u2019 speedster had a special teams scoring return.<\/p>\n
West Scranton closed within 14-13 when Austin Sostre hit Jonyae again for a 17-yard touchdown with 1:59 left in a frantic first quarter.<\/p>\n
On their next possession, the Invaders took the lead for good. Colbert made a fingertips catch for 46 yards, setting up Austin Sostre\u2019s 3-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.<\/p>\n
Carbondale Area (1-1) made two attempts to score by driving inside the West Scranton 15, but both times they were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n
The first failed because of untimely penalties. Carbondale Area had 10 penalties for 115 yards in the game.<\/p>\n
The second halted when Colbert intercepted a Voglino pass in the end zone.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a red-zone play,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cI watched film all week. They call that a toss pass. I read it and made the play.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the ensuing drive, Colbert pushed the lead to 25-14 with his 50-yard touchdown reception.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I lined up, I saw No. 1 (Roman) inside me,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cI made a move and got open. I avoided the tackle and made it a touchdown.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carbondale Area responded.<\/p>\n
Roman, who finished with 120 yards on 20 carries, delivered a 33-yard run and a 1-yard touchdown. The Chargers stopped a West Scranton advance inside the 5, denying a score.<\/p>\n
However, Mosley intercepted a pass with less than one minute to play to secure the win.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou never want to accept losing, but I am proud of my kids,\u201d Carbondale Area head coach Jeff Arthur said. \u201cWe did some good things here. I think we grew up a little, too. I want my teams to be aggressive, but tonight we were over-aggressive at times. We are going to bounce back.
