Caernarvon Township police say they have noticed a sharp rise in bank impersonation scams targeting residents.<\/p>\n
Scammers are using digital spoofing technology to hijack real bank names and phone numbers to make their calls and texts look\u00a0 authentic, police said in an online posting.<\/p>\n
Police cited these common tactics:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Spoofed caller ID: The call or text displays your actual bank\u2019s name.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Artificial urgency: They claim someone is stealing your money right now.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Secret requests: They ask for your password, PIN or login code.<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u201cSafe account\u201d transfers: They tell you to send funds via Zelle, wire transfer to \u201creverse\u201d fraud or take money out and give it to an agent.<\/p>\n
Police offered the following safeguards:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Hang up immediately: Do not engage, reply or click links.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Call back safely:\u00a0Dial the trusted number printed directly on the back of your debit or credit card or bank statement.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Keep codes private:\u00a0Your bank will\u00a0never\u00a0ask you to read back a verification code or transfer money to yourself.<\/p>\n
Police advised sharing this information with friends, family and elderly neighbors.<\/p>\n
