The bulk of those customers are in Pittsburgh, more than 1,100, with more than 100 in Hampton’s Allison Park neighborhood and in Oakmont, too.

Cleanup also continued throughout the region.

The Nevin Arena at Greensburg’s Lynch Field will likely be closed for several days after the building took on a massive amount of stormwater.

Water getting in is not all that unusual, but Thursday’s stormwater infiltration was a little different, according to people who were at the arena.

“The power was out all over when we got to Greensburg,” said Alisa Adams of Jeannette, whose sons play hockey for the Westmoreland Eagles. The Eagles were scheduled to do film review on Thursday evening at the arena.

“I talked to (Westmoreland Hockey Association Vice President) Mary LeBlanc, who was using a Shop-vac on some of the water coming in, which is pretty typical,” Adams said. “But then we noticed some water coming in through the kitchen and also from underneath a new locker room door, which hadn’t happened before.”

When LeBlanc went into the locker room, Adams said the water was up to her ankles. Shortly afterward, people at the arena underwent a calm, but necessary evacuation.

“When we left, the creek by Dairy Queen was over (New Alexandria Road), and they’d shut down parts of Route 119 and Route 819 already,” Adams said.

At the Charley Family Shop’n Save just north of Greensburg, most of the staff pitched in after the store lost power for more than 15 hours as storms rolled in on Thursday night.

“We had to close on Friday,” owner Tom Charley said. “It was an unreal team effort to get ready to be open (Saturday) — nothing less than a miracle.”

Charley said the store suffered nearly a total loss of all its refrigerated and frozen items, but was ready to open Saturday morning with shelves being filled back up.

Resident clean-up

In Hempfield, officials have set up drop-off locations that will be available starting Sunday for residents to dispose of flood-related waste and storm yard waste.

In partnership with County Hauling, drop points will be set up at :

• The Hempfield municipal building, 1132 Woodward Drive — small Dumpsters and yard waste drop-off are already available, with a large roll-off arriving Sunday.

• Hempfield Fire Department Midway/St. Clair station, 1966 Broadway Avenue — small Dumpsters and yard waste drop-off are already available, with a large roll-off arriving Sunday.

• Hempfield Fire Department North Hempfield station, 1284 Business Route 66 — large roll-off being delivered Sunday.

• Adamsburg VFD (flood waste only), 488 Edna Road — large roll-off being delivered Sunday.

• Hempfield Park Dog Park Lot 2 (yard waste only), 220 Forbes Trail Road — yard waste drop-off currently available.

Yard waste is limited to sticks, branches, tree limbs, plants, and other loose vegetative material and should be placed directly on the ground in the marked yard-waste areas. Township officials asked residents to not place bags, containers, household trash, or other refuse in the yard-waste areas.

A better forecast

The good news, according to the National Weather Service, is that after the possibility of a little more rain late Saturday afternoon, the rest of the Labor Day weekend will be nice and dry.

“We still have a small chance of an afternoon shower around 5 or 6 p.m. today, but then we’ll dry out,” meteorologist Chris Leonardi said. “We’ll get close to 80 degrees, and the remainer of the weekend is looking sunny and dry — and we need it.”

Power continues to return to areas left without electricity after Thursday night’s heavy stream of storms.
