BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Emily Schenkel from the Bethlehem area showed 69 News photos of her aunt, Lorraine Bay.<\/p>\n
“She was actually my father’s first cousin, but they were both only children, so she was always my Aunt Lorraine and she always will be my Aunt Lorraine,” said Schenkel.<\/p>\n
Bay was also her Godmother. Schenkel said the two would go shopping together. She said she used to fly a lot for work, and said she and her aunt, who was a flight attendant would also talk a lot about travel.<\/p>\n
“She did not have children, so I was very spoiled by her and we had a wonderful relationship,” said Schenkel.<\/p>\n
Schenkel said she called her brother in New York the morning of September 11th, 2001, when she heard about the attack on the World Trade Center. He was okay, but then she got a call from a family member telling her Lorraine was working on Flight 93.<\/p>\n
The hijacked flight crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania– about 80 miles outside of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n
“She was near retirement. She was actually one of the most senior flight attendants for United at the time and wasn’t flying a lot, so we were also taken by surprise,” said Schenkel.<\/p>\n
Passengers and crew members worked to retake the plane after finding out about the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.<\/p>\n
“So, to me, it was just very important that on that dark day, there were so many decisions made out of love and to protect other people. So, I think it’s so important to remember that and focus on that and pay respect to that,” said Schenkel.<\/p>\n
Schenkel said she knew that day if she would have a daughter, she would name her Lorraine.<\/p>\n
“I think it was just a way of honoring her memory, and she was such a beautiful, wonderful, warm, kind, generous person, and to be able to continue her memory in any way,” said Schenkel.<\/p>\n
And she did. Lorraine Schenkel is a junior at Liberty High School.<\/p>\n
