BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) \u2014 Hungary ordered 10 members of Russia\u2019s diplomatic mission to leave the country<\/a> over activities deemed unacceptable for diplomats, the government said Tuesday, and Russia said that it planned to respond.<\/p>\n

The Russian ambassador was informed that \u201caccording to the assessment of the Hungarian authorities, 10 members of the Russian mission had engaged in activities in Hungary that are unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention,\u201d Foreign Minister Anita Orb\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n

That is a reference to an international treaty that governs the conduct of diplomats.<\/p>\n

The foreign minister, who isn’t related to former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n, didn’t specify the alleged activities or say how long the Russian personnel had to leave Hungary, but stressed that her country seeks to maintain diplomatic contacts with Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis decision protects Hungary\u2019s security and sovereignty,\u201d Orb\u00e1n wrote in a statement. \u201cIt does not imply breaking off diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue, based on mutual respect and adherence to the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in comments to Russia\u2019s state news agency RIA Novosti, vowed to provide \u201can appropriate response\u201d to the expulsions. It didn’t elaborate.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s move comes under Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who took office<\/a> earlier this year promising to end the country\u2019s pro-Russia policies.<\/p>\n

Magyar’s predecessor, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, was an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/a> who repeatedly delayed or blocked European Union sanctions on Russia and pursued energy deals with Russia.<\/p>\n

European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand said Tuesday that \u201cwe take note of Hungary\u2019s legitimate decision\u201d to expel the Russian diplomats. He said it was an expected reaction due to \u201cRussia\u2019s persistent campaign in using hybrid attacks against the EU and its member states.\u201d<\/p>\n
