UPMC is helping shine a light on suicide prevention throughout Erie this September as part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, September 8th, recognized as 9-8-8 Day, Crisis Services at Safe Harbor was in Perry Square handing out purple lightbulbs to encourage residents to take part in the \u201cLighting the City Purple\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n
The campaign encourages businesses, restaurants, and residents to use purple lighting throughout September. The fountain in Perry Square and Bicentennial Tower will also be illuminated purple, along with participating businesses and homes.<\/p>\n
The effort is designed to raise awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and encourage people to have open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.<\/p>\n
Tracy Carlini, Crisis Clinician Supervisor with Crisis Services at Safe Harbor, said people should not be afraid or ashamed to ask for help.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just think it’s important for people to not be ashamed, and if they’re having thoughts of suicide, you know, reach out,\u201d Carlini said. \u201cThere’s people out there that want to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carlini also encouraged people who are concerned about a loved one to start a conversation and ask directly about their mental health.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon’t be afraid to talk to them about it,\u201d she said. \u201cAsk the questions, and get them the help they need.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support to people experiencing a mental health or suicide-related crisis. People can call or text 988 to connect with trained crisis counselors.<\/p>\n
Organizers say the purple lighting campaign is one way to remind the community that help is available and that talking openly about mental health can help break down the stigma surrounding suicide.<\/p>\n
