With Republicans holding just a four-seat margin in the U.S. House, Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District has emerged as one of the handful of races most likely to determine which party controls the chamber after November, according to CBS Philadelphia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All four of the state’s most competitive seats are currently held by Republicans.<\/p>\n

The 7th District, covering Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties along with part of Monroe County, sits at the center of that fight. Cook Political Report rates it a toss-up.<\/p>\n

A Narrow Win Now Under Pressure<\/p>\n

Republican Rep. Ryan Mackenzie flipped the seat in 2024, defeating then-incumbent Democrat Susan Wild by roughly 4,000 votes.<\/p>\n

Analysts noted at the time that he ran behind President Donald Trump in his own district, a sign of vulnerability heading into a midterm cycle.<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday<\/a> that Mackenzie’s margin amounted to just one percentage point.<\/p>\n

Mackenzie has drawn high-profile backing.<\/p>\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson campaigned with him in the district in August, and Trump visited in June, though the president spent nearly an hour of a rambling speech before mentioning Mackenzie by name.<\/p>\n

Brooks Launches General Election Campaign<\/p>\n

Mackenzie’s Democratic challenger is Bob Brooks, a retired Bethlehem firefighter and union leader who spent two decades in the fire service.<\/p>\n

Brooks released his first television ad of the general election Tuesday, depicting himself in fire gear and framing Washington as a problem working people are paying for.<\/p>\n

He has campaigned on raising the federal minimum wage, banning corporate donations to political action committees, Congressional term limits and prohibiting lawmakers from trading stocks while in office.<\/p>\n

That mix of economic populism and reform messaging has drawn support from across the Democratic spectrum.<\/p>\n

Gov. Josh Shapiro and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders have both backed Brooks, as has U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who visited the district in July.<\/p>\n

Latino Voters a Decisive Factor<\/p>\n

Reporting by The Morning Call<\/a> shows both campaigns are working aggressively to court Latino voters, who make up roughly 23% of the district’s population.<\/p>\n

Allentown, which is more than half Latino, and Bethlehem, about one-third Latino, are the population centers where those margins are expected to matter most.<\/p>\n

A Morning Call analysis of 2024 Lehigh County data found that shifts in majority-Latino Allentown neighborhoods were decisive in Mackenzie’s original victory.<\/p>\n

Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk told the outlet that the city’s residents have tipped electoral outcomes before and can do so again.<\/p>\n

Brooks launched a Latino outreach initiative called “Bombero Bob” at Allentown’s Central Fire Station on September 2.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that Democrats lost ground with Latino voters in 2024 and said the party must earn back trust it let slip by failing to engage those communities directly.<\/p>\n

His coalition includes city council Vice President Cynthia Mota, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 735 President Lou Jimenez and radio host Victor Martinez of LA Mega 101.7FM.<\/p>\n

Latino voters nationally shifted eight points toward Trump in 2024, driven largely by economic concerns, according to Associated Press analysis cited by the Morning Call.<\/p>\n
