South Abington Twp. officials want to recognize those who served their country.<\/p>\n
Officials are accepting applications for the township\u2019s first Hometown Heroes banner program this month. The township\u2019s Department of Public Works will hang them on Northern Boulevard but will also, if requested, place them close to the home of the person who served.<\/p>\n
Supervisor Vice Chairman Don Snyder came up with the idea as a way to honor people who served in the military. He said there were already brackets up on poles from previous banner projects but it took time to organize the logistics of the new program.<\/p>\n
Although Snyder, a retired paramedic, has never served in the armed forces, he is close with many military personnel among his family and friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think they deserve to have the people of the community realize that the guy that they might be standing next to helped our country,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m doing something for the military and for the families of the military.\u201d<\/p>\n
The banners are $225, which includes printing, hanging them and the bracket they will be hung on. Those applying have to provide proof of the person\u2019s military service, including where they served and the dates of service. Applications are available at the Municipal Building, and those looking for information can call 570-586-2111.\n<\/p>\n
The banners will be hung once the first applications start arriving, Snyder said, and they will remain up unless they are damaged or faded, at which point officials will contact the family about replacing them.<\/p>\n
Supervisor Chairman Mark Dougherty, who served as a Navy corpsman with the Marine Corps for four years, thinks the program is great for the township.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo me, it\u2019s important we honor people that were in the service,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s well our worth, well worth the effort.\u201d<\/p>\n
Snyder thinks the banners will bring community pride to the township, those who served in the military and their families.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re supporting our military,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re supporting the people who fought for us and the people who are now fighting for us again for our country, and I think that I have a sense of pride in that.
