SCRANTON, Pa. \u2014 A decommissioned military vehicle is not quite done with its tour of duty. Instead of transporting troops, it will be outfitted to assist in water rescues with the Scranton Fire Department.<\/p>\n
“At the FEMA, national and state levels, when there’s a significant flooding event, what you’ll find is usually with those water rescue teams they have National Guard or other departments that have high-water vehicles similar to this,” said Chief John Judge, Scranton Fire Department.<\/p>\n

While Scranton may be landlocked, Fire Chief John Judge says water rescue scenarios are not uncommon.<\/p>\n
Three years ago, several rivers, creeks, and tributaries that run throughout scranton and across Lackawanna County flooded streets and destroyed neighborhoods after weekend storms.<\/p>\n
“Being able to evacuate people out of their homes is kind of our mission, so this is just another tool in the toolbox for us to be able to get our expert water rescue teams into those areas,” said Chief Judge.<\/p>\n
Chief Judge says the city purchased the former brush truck from a fire community in Susquehanna County earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Another addition to what he says is a well-equipped water rescue fleet.<\/p>\n
“When I got on until 2020, we had a boat that hung on the wall at rescue, an old John boat. We now have four swift water rescue boats. We have the high-water vehicle, we have a rescue trailer, and the most important thing is we have trained members,” said Judge.<\/p>\n
As the new truck sits outside, inside the department’s training center along Colfax Avenue, firefighters were in a classroom.<\/p>\n
Going through lessons and scenarios that can come into play anytime.<\/p>\n
“We’ve invested in a lot of those members to become instructors, and I think that that’s key. So now our members are instructing our own, and I think that’s real key, and that’s been a big change here in the city of Scranton, and we’ll continue to make those investments in our people,” said Judge.<\/p>\n
