Mother of 2-month-old speaks out after being exposed to measles at UPMC Children’s Hospital<\/p>\n

It has been a whirlwind for Lauren Shoup and her 2-month-old daughter, Kieran, after learning they were exposed to measles during a visit to the Giraffe Suite at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in late August.<\/p>\n

Shoup said she was notified of the exposure three days later and was asked to return to the hospital so Kieran could receive an antibody treatment. <\/p>\n

“At that time, that was the only directions we were given. So to me, that was the only way to remain safe was to go to the hospital and get these antibody injections,” Shoup said.<\/p>\n

However, Shoup said she noticed gaps in the hospital’s precautions during their return visit. <\/p>\n

“They didn’t take precautions in preventing the spread when we came back,” she said. “In hindsight, we definitely exposed a lot of people. But I was just doing what I was told, which was what I thought was best to protect Kieran.”<\/p>\n

Shoup said she and her daughter have been in quarantine since the exposure. She recently received a call from UPMC asking why Kieran had not returned for a follow-up appointment unrelated to the exposure.<\/p>\n

“And it just baffled me because we can’t return, because we’re in quarantine, because the last appointment we were exposed to measles, and I just couldn’t fathom why they would ask me that,” Shoup said. “And then it occurred to me, it’s because they’re not noting this in her chart.” <\/p>\n

UPMC officials responded to the situation with a statement, saying, \u201cWe understand how concerning a potential measles exposure can be, especially when it involves a child. Our clinical and Infection Prevention teams are providing appropriate information and guidance to those directly affected. We are reviewing the concerns that have been raised and remain committed to working with public health officials and providing appropriate guidance to anyone who may have been exposed. Measles is a highly contagious disease, and vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and vulnerable members of the community who may be unable to receive vaccines or may not develop full protection because they are too young or have certain medical conditions. Because of patient privacy, we cannot discuss an individual patient\u2019s care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shoup said she appreciates UPMC’s efforts but is urging the hospital system to be more transparent and accountable.<\/p>\n

“We were brought back into a public waiting room and exposed people in the elevator, in the lobby and the mouse suite at Children’s, and the onus is on them to have provided instructions, given us an alternate entrance.
