\n A vintage warplane’s short hop ended upside down on a Pennsylvania runway Wednesday night, but the pilot made it out alive. Police in Limerick Township say the World War II-era, single-engine aircraft crashed and flipped while trying to land at Heritage Field Airport around 7:17pm, leaving its lone occupant trapped in the cockpit, Fox News<\/a> reports. An airport worker and officers cut the pilot free from his parachute and pulled him from the plane before firefighters arrived. He was conscious, able to stand, and had visible cuts, authorities said. \n <\/p>\n


\n The pilot was treated at the scene, then taken to Reading Trauma Center. “He seemed to be talking and everything when he left the scene here,” said Limerick Fire Department Chief Ken Shuler. The plane had departed Pottstown and was headed to Quakertown, but it came down after only about nine minutes in the air. The crash caused a fuel leak, prompting firefighters to stay on-site to contain the spill and monitor for fire as the general-aviation airport remained closed. \n <\/p>\n


\n Federal Aviation Administration records show that the aircraft is a Harvard 3 variant of the historic T-6 aircraft and was manufactured in 1944, 6ABC<\/a> reports. Records show that it was used by British Royal Navy to train combat pilots during World War II, per CBS News<\/a>.
