Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville marks 25 years since Sept. 11 attacks<\/p>\n

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. \u2014<\/p>\n

Friday marks 25 years since nearly 3,000 people were killed as 19 al-Qaeda hijackers seized control of four jetliners on Sept. 11, 2001. <\/p>\n

Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon and a fourth into a field in Somerset County.<\/p>\n

Observations and memorials were held Friday at 9\/11 ceremonies across the U.S., including the attack sites in New York, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

The observance at the Flight 93 National Memorial commemorated the time when passengers and crew members aboard Flight 93 took action to disrupt the hijackers’ plans to fly the plane into a federal building in Washington. Forty passengers and crew members were killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, two ceremonies were held to honor the thousands of lives lost.<\/p>\n

The morning observance began at 8:30 a.m. at the Wall of Names, where officials read the names of the 40 passengers and crew members aboard Flight 93. The Bells of Remembrance rang in their honor.<\/p>\n

At 1 p.m., a second ceremony took place at the Wall of Names, featuring keynote speakers, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who paid tribute to the lives lost. The ceremony concluded with a wreath-laying event.<\/p>\n
