PITTSBURGH \u2014 More than 600 volunteers packed upwards of 200,000 meals for those in need at Acrisure Stadium on Friday, Sept. 11, marking 25 years since the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil.<\/p>\n
The event was organized by the nonprofit 9\/11 Day. Back in 2009, the group successfully advocated for Sept. 11 to be recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under federal law.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe whole mission of 9\/11 Day is to bring people together. It\u2019s something we saw in the wake of 9\/11 25 years ago,\u201d said Samantha Blout of 9\/11 Day. \u201cWe saw the entire community come together to help serve one another. It\u2019s something, the spirit of unity and being mission-driven, that we want to continue today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Once the meals are packed by volunteers, they will head to the Greater Pittsburgh Area Community Food Bank.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike many Americans, we worked together 25 years ago today, and we remember that tragic day and all of the trials and tribulations of the day, so it felt fitting to come together,\u201d Danielle Carlini said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s something so meaningful, and we love to see the community come to serve their own community,\u201d Blout said.<\/p>\n
Pittsburgh is one of 51 cities participating in the event. 9\/11 Day says its event will mobilize 50,000 volunteers to pack 20 million meals.<\/p>\n
