Skiing should be fun, not corporate.\u201d &#8211; Mike Ruzek, The Powder Buoy<\/p>\n<p>PARK CITY, Utah \u2014 When the buoy pops, the powder is on its way.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the straightforward yet unlikely logic behind <a href=\"https:\/\/powderbuoy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Powder Buoy<\/a>\u2014a weather predictor that has gained a cult following among thousands of skiers across the West. Photo: Mike Ruzek<\/p>\n<p>A wealth manager by profession and a lifelong skier at heart, Ruzek has called Park City home since 2003. The idea for Powder Buoy dates back to 2004, when a retired engineer client named Hank Manninen moved to Hawaii. \u201cHe was watching these NOAA buoys for surf reports,\u201d Ruzek recalled. \u201cOne day, he told me, \u2018Every time I see a big swell here, two weeks later it snows back home.\u2019 I thought he was crazy. But then I started watching too\u2014and sure enough, there was something there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar Reads On TownLift<\/p>\n<p>What began as a text chain among ski buddies evolved into a phenomenon. Photo: TownLift<\/p>\n<p>Today, the project exists as a blend of science, folklore, and community spirit. \u201cMy best explanation is that these are low-pressure systems moving across the Pacific, passing north of Hawaii on their way here,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen the buoy\u2019s wave height jumps from five to fifteen feet, that energy is moving our way. About two weeks later, we feel it in the snow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, Ruzek resists turning Powder Buoy into a \u201cserious\u201d forecasting operation. \u201cThere are plenty of places for hard meteorology,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is more like your grandma saying her toe hurts\u2014it\u2019s gonna snow. A longtime resident of Park City, he has served on the Park City Community Foundation board, including time as chair and emcee for Live PC Give PC for seven years. Skiing is supposed to be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He is also known for organizing one of Park City\u2019s most legendary winter events\u2014the Hot Dog Party, an unapologetically \u201880s ski bash that has become local lore.<\/p>\n<p>As for success, Ruzek doesn\u2019t measure it by clicks or followers. \u201cIt\u2019s measured in joy,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s when someone messages me to say they just had the trip of their life\u2014or when I meet someone in Japan or Alaska who recognizes the hat. That\u2019s the good stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Ruzek, Powder Buoy remains what it has always been: a reminder that everything is connected. \u201cSurfing and skiing are really the same sport,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s all the same water\u2014liquid in one place, snow in another.
