Josh Shapiro and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that followed is making it harder for families to know what to believe.

Katrine L. Wallace, an epidemiologist at the University of Illinois Chicago who studies vaccine-preventable illness and health communication, argues that when official health authorities contradict each other openly, the public loses its ability to tell which disagreements rest on evidence and which are driven by politics.

Two Infants, Two Different Findings

Lancaster County Coroner Stephen Diamantoni reached separate conclusions about each death.

For a newborn boy who died in mid-August, Diamantoni determined the cause was a ruptured spleen unrelated to his measles infection.

For a six-week-old girl who died Aug. 18, he found measles was the cause of death.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health labeled both deaths measles-associated, a holding category used when measles is present but an official cause has not yet been finalized.

That designation is not a final verdict.

The CDC’s measles dashboard did not list either death as of Sept. 10.

Why the Numbers Don’t Match

The gap between state and federal tallies reflects the fact that two separate systems work on different timelines; neither has made an error.

County coroners make legal determinations case by case, and those findings feed into national vital statistics data over weeks.

State health departments run disease surveillance, which moves within days because outbreak containment requires it.

Measles is a notifiable condition under federal rules, meaning confirmed measles deaths are added to a national count. Where measles appears on the death certificate matters.

The underlying cause goes on one line and enters the count; contributing conditions go on a separate line and are not counted.

These two processes rarely align in real time during an active outbreak.

The Shapiro-Kennedy Exchange

The coroner’s findings and the state’s surveillance language gave both sides material to work with.

Shapiro and Kennedy each staked out competing public positions, with Wallace characterizing the exchange, as reported by The Conversation and PhillyVoice, as more of a brawl than a technical dispute between officials sorting through overlapping bureaucratic systems.

For Northeast Philadelphia families following Pennsylvania’s outbreak, that political dimension carries a cost.

When state and federal officials publicly disagree on something as concrete as whether a child died of measles, parents trying to make vaccination decisions have no reliable single source to turn to.

Wallace’s assessment is direct: public confidence in the institutions meant to answer that question is eroding in the middle of an active outbreak, and that erosion is the real harm regardless of which line measles occupies on a death certificate.

source: The Conversation Pennsylvania has recorded more than 600 measles cases in 2026, and two Lancaster County infants…

[6
28,30,29
post-284490","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-pennsylvania","tag-pennsylvania","tag-pennsylvania-headlines","tag-pennsylvania-news
["GET
