LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) \u2014 Four fully vaccinated people have tested positive for measles in Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Health. <\/p>\n
Secretary of Health Debra Bogen said Friday these cases were reported in Centre, Jefferson, Lancaster and Lycoming counties. <\/p>\n
Three of the individuals were adults, and one was a child, Bogen said. She said this was expected, as the CDC reports<\/a> a two-dose MMR vaccine provides roughly 97% protection from measles.<\/p>\n Bogen urged Pennsylvanians to get the MMR vaccine, saying that even those who get measles will have milder symptoms compared to unvaccinated individuals.<\/p>\n PREVIOUS COVERAGE | How do Lancaster County’s Amish feel about vaccines? Opinions mixed as measles cases rise<\/a><\/p>\n As of Friday, the state has reported 676 total measles cases and 124 total hospitalizations across 37 counties. Roughly 43% of the cases are documented in Lancaster County, according to the Department of Health. <\/p>\n Below is the Department of Health’s measles dashboard, which includes county-by-county statistics. The dashboard is updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.<\/p>\n The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports<\/a> 3,294 total cases in the United States, which is 1,005 cases more than it reported in 2025.<\/p>\n According to the CDC, Pennsylvania has the second-most cases of any state. South Carolina has the most reported cases with 670. <\/p>\n Response to measles deaths<\/p>\n Bogen also addressed the two measles-associated deaths reported by the Department of Health. She clarified why the department did not release details on the two deaths.<\/p>\n Public health work undertaken by the Department of Health is guided by state laws and by regulations. Those laws and regulations provide for the confidentiality of records received, created and maintained by the department. Two of these laws are the Vital Statistics Law<\/a> and the Disease Prevention and Control Law,<\/a> which allow for personal information disclosure only in very, very narrow circumstances that do not apply to these deaths. The department shared what information we could on the two measles-associated deaths to inform the public of the impact of the ongoing outbreak and to underscore how dangerous the measles virus can be.Unlike the Department of Health, county coroners and healthcare providers have different laws and regulations that govern their work and what they can disclose. So, there may be differences in the level of detail made available. Importantly, the Department of Health hopes the takeaway from the information, regardless of the source, is the same. Measles is a highly contagious virus that can cause serious illness, and the best way to protect yourself and others is to get fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n
