JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. \u2014 A Pennsylvania coroner has confirmed a measles-related death.<\/p>\n
Coroner Greg Furlong said a 40-year-old woman is the first person to die from measles-related complications in Jefferson County.<\/p>\n
The woman died on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease,\u201d said Coroner Greg Furlong. \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. We ask that the public and media respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their loved one.\u201d<\/p>\n
Furlong said no further information will be released about the woman at this time. <\/p>\n
The coroner\u2019s office also stressed urgency in recognizing the measles outbreak as a serious public health priority.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile cases of severe illness remain uncommon, this tragedy highlights that measles should not be taken lightly. Public health measures, early recognition of symptoms, and consultation with healthcare providers are important tools in protecting our community,\u201d Public Relations Officer Jason Stiver said.<\/p>\n
Stiver encourages residents to stay up-to-date on the best health practices available at this time.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeasles is highly contagious and can result in serious respiratory illness, hospitalization, and in rare cases like this, death. We encourage residents to stay informed, follow guidance from public health officials, and take appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n
