Montco Jazz Festival: Larry McKenna Jazz Orchestra featuring Joanna Pascale<\/p>\n
Larry McKenna was one of the world\u2019s finest jazz saxophonists, celebrated for his rich, velvet tone, his lyrical gift for ballad playing, and his fluid, bebop-inspired improvisations. A deeply beloved figure in jazz, he shared the stage and studio with many of the music\u2019s great voices, including Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, and Frank Sinatra. His writing and arranging are showcased in The Larry McKenna Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece ensemble devoted to performing his original compositions and arrangements. JAZZ ON A SUMMER\u2019S DAY features intimate performances by an all-star line-up of musical legends including Louis Armstrong, Thelonius Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Anita O\u2019Day, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, and closes with a beautiful rendition of \u201cThe Lord\u2019s Prayer\u201d by Mahalia Jackson at midnight to usher in Sunday morning. Presented in a sparkling new 4K restoration, this 1959 classic is considered one of the most extraordinary and possibly the first concert film ever made. Washington\u2019s Farewell: A Constitutional Convention Send-Off<\/p>\n
Join the Independence Historical Trust, the philanthropic partner to Independence National Historical Park, for a Toast to George Washington at its 5th Annual Washington\u2019s Farewell Event. During this night of toasts, drinks, and camaraderie, a farewell event for George Washington will be loosely recreated at the First Bank of the United States to celebrate the events at City Tavern following the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Before the famous document was signed, Washington and some friends headed to City Tavern for a party hosted by the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry. The bar tab came to more than 89 pounds \u2013 or more than $16,000 in today\u2019s money! Celebrate with refreshments and merriment.<\/p>\n

Chelsea Reed is a jazz vocalist, arranger, composer, and bandleader living in Philadelphia. She\u2019s been singing and playing for audiences all over the world and adding band members along the way as the leader of the Fair Weather Band. With four albums and a decade of touring under her belt, Chelsea Reed brings the soul of a dance to any show–whether at a jazz club, backroom blues bar, or festival stage. Reed draws upon the intensity of powerhouse vocalists and the ingenuity of 20th century composers. She currently teaches jazz history and performance at Temple University. This Constitution Day, the National Constitution Center will explore the lives and legacies of four influential but often overlooked founders: John Dickinson, Gouverneur Morris, Roger Sherman, and James Wilson. These \u201cforgotten founders\u201d played critical roles in drafting the Constitution, shaping the structure of the new government, and securing the document\u2019s ratification. Carol Berkin, author of the National Constitution Center\u2019s definitive short biographies of all 56 signers; Jane E. Calvert, author of Penman of the Founding: A Biography of John Dickinson; Scott S. Greenberger, author of The Forsaken Founder: Gouverneur Morris, the Unsung Patriot Who Wrote the Constitution, Stood Up to Slavery, and Survived the Reign of Terror; and Jesse Wegman, author of The Lost Founder: James Wilson and the Forgotten Fight for a People\u2019s Constitution, will examine how these figures shaped the Constitution and why their ideas continue to resonate in American civic life today. In 1763, most American colonists proudly saw themselves as members of the British Empire. Yet by 1776, many were ready to break from Britain and condemn King George III as a \u2018Royal Brute.\u2019 Paths to Independence explores how this remarkable shift happened in just over a decade. The exhibit showcases rare documents from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\u2014including letters, pamphlets, broadsides, prints, and early drafts of the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. Tracing the complex path to American independence, these documents reveal the ideas of well\u2011known leaders such as Benjamin Franklin, John Dickinson, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Wilson, as well as the everyday Philadelphians whose experiences shaped the struggle for independence.<\/p>\n

The show continues its 99-year history with a platform for student artists to learn from professional artists and gain exposure to patrons. Welcome to a fashion illustration workshop where art and fashion come together. This 2.5-hour workshop is designed for beginners and students of all experience levels, whether you are brand new to drawing, curious about fashion illustration, or already enjoy creating your own designs. Together, we will explore the basics of fashion illustration in a relaxed and supportive setting. You will learn how to sketch a simple fashion figure, also called a croquis, gain an understanding of basic body proportions, and use that figure as the foundation for designing your own one-of-a-kind look. This workshop focuses on learning, experimenting, and enjoying the creative process. You will be encouraged to explore your personal style, try new ideas, and bring fashion to life on paper. By the end of the workshop, you will have your own illustration to take home, along with a better understanding of how fashion illustration begins.
