In a post from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Saturday, Coroner Greg Furlong has confirmed the county’s first measles-related death. A 40-year-old female resident of Jefferson County died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from complications associated with measles.<\/p>\n

Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner and Public Relations Officer Jason Stiver emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding the disease. “Many people associate measles with a childhood illness, but it can lead to severe complications in individuals of any age,” Stiver said. “Measles is highly contagious and can result in serious respiratory illness, hospitalization, and in rare cases like this, death.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is the first measles-related death in Jefferson County and the third in the state this year<\/a> (Lancaster County-2).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe encourage residents to stay informed, follow guidance from public health officials, and take appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stiver added that preventing the spread of measles remains a public health priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile cases of severe illness remain uncommon, this tragedy highlights that measles should not be taken lightly. Public health measures, early recognition of symptoms, and consultation with healthcare providers are important tools in protecting our community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Coroner\u2019s Office is currently working with the PA Department of Health in regards to this case.<\/p>\n

Jefferson County has reported 26 confirmed measles cases through September 11.
