{"id":285371,"date":"2026-09-13T23:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-13T23:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/285371\/"},"modified":"2026-09-13T23:00:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-13T23:00:14","slug":"third-measles-death-reported-in-pennsylvania-amid-ongoing-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/285371\/","title":{"rendered":"Third measles death reported in Pennsylvania amid ongoing outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sept. 13 (UPI) &#8212; A death from measles has been reported in western Pennsylvania, the third fatality in the state&#8217;s ongoing measles outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The death of an unnamed 40-year-old woman Saturday follows the deaths of two children<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Many people associate measles with a childhood illness, but it can lead to severe complications in individuals of any age,&#8221; Jason Stiver, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner and public relations officer, <a data-ylk=\"slk:said in a statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61585712572615\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>. &#8220;Measles is highly contagious and can result in serious respiratory illness, hospitalization, and in rare cases like this, death.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the statement, Jefferson County is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health regarding the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Measles<a data-ylk=\"slk:is extremely contagious;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/sep\/13\/pennsylvania-third-measles-death-outbreak\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> is extremely contagious<\/a> and hospitalizes 20% of the unvaccinated people that are infected. Between one and three children in 1,000 die from respiratory and neurologic complications related to the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Pennsylvania as of last week had nearly 700 measles cases in 37 counties.
