NEW YORK, Sept 13 (Reuters) – The \u2060death \u2060toll in Pennsylvania’s measles \u2060outbreak rose this weekend with a county coroner’s report \u200bof a woman’s death from complications related to the disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The coroner’s office of \u200cwestern Pennsylvania’s Jefferson County reported \u200cthat a 40-year-old woman died on Saturday from complications associated with \u2060measles. \u2060The commonwealth has seen an outbreak of the highly-infectious disease, adding \u200bto a resurgence of measles\u00a0in the United States as official data shows declining U.S. vaccination rates.<\/p>\n
The coroner’s office said it was working with the Pennsylvania Department \u200bof Health.<\/p>\n
“This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an \u2060unfortunate reminder \u2060that measles can be \u2060a \u200bserious and potentially life-threatening disease,” Coroner Greg Furlong said in a statement posted \u200bon\u00a0Facebook.<\/p>\n
The state Department \u2060of Health said on Friday that it has confirmed 676 measles cases across Pennsylvania in 2026, with 124 measles-related hospitalizations.<\/p>\n
The first U.S. measles-related deaths of the year were reported by the\u00a0Pennsylvania Department of Health on August \u206025.<\/p>\n
The Pennsylvania Department of Health said it is conducting its own review \u2060of the Jefferson County case based upon its detailed epidemiological case definition for a measles-associated death. That definition was provided to the CDC and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) on September 10, the statement added.<\/p>\n
The CDC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Jefferson County death.<\/p>\n
U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr \u2014 a long-time skeptic of vaccines \u2014 asked \u2060his new CDC director to remove a reference to the two deaths from the agency\u2019s online measles tally after he questioned whether the disease contributed to the fatalities, Reuters reported earlier this month, \u200bciting people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n
