It was a beautiful day for running at Presque Isle State Park as nearly 1,200 runners took part in the Erie Marathon, many chasing a personal-best time on the fast, flat course.<\/p>\n

The starting gun went off at 7 a.m. Sunday, sending runners onto the 26.2-mile course for two full loops around the peninsula.<\/p>\n

Participants traveled from throughout the region, as well as from multiple states and countries, to compete in the annual race.<\/p>\n

The Erie Marathon is also one of the final opportunities of the year for runners hoping to post a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. Organizers say the course’s flat terrain and scenic setting continue to make it a popular event for both local runners and visitors from across the country.<\/p>\n

The race is often described by participants as \u201cflat, fast and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colton Cassel, 28, of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, finished first among the men with a time of 2:35:10.<\/p>\n

Danielle Scida, 34, of Kane, Pennsylvania, was the top female finisher, completing the marathon in 2:56:41.<\/p>\n

The race also included a special milestone for the Erie News Now team. Our Elspeth Mizner completed her first full marathon Sunday at Presque Isle.<\/p>\n
