Lackawanna County and its environmental sustainability office will hold another free event late next month where county residents who preregister can safely dispose of automotive fluids, aerosols, pest poisons, chemicals and other unwanted hazardous household materials.<\/p>\n
The hazardous waste collection planned for Halloween, Oct. 31, will take place at the Pavilion at Montage Mountain, 1000 Montage Mountain Road.<\/p>\n
Preregistration for the event is required and currently open after commissioners approved a service agreement last month with MXI Environmental Services LLC, the firm that will accept and dispose of the hazardous materials again this year after serving as the county\u2019s disposal vendor in recent years. County Environmental Sustainability Director Nicole Shapiro described the collection event as an opportunity to \u201cget rid of anything that might be sitting in your basements or garages.\u201d<\/p>\n
Providing a safe and convenient disposal option for residents \u2014 the free event is open only to people who live in Lackawanna County \u2014 should help keep more hazardous and toxic materials out of curbside trash and local landfills and reduce incidents of illegal dumping.<\/p>\n
Items that will be accepted include adhesives; automotive fluids; automotive, household and lithium batteries; fire extinguishers; floor and furniture polishes; fuel, such as gas, kerosene and propane; rodent and other pest poisons; pool treatments; lawn treatments; oil-based paints, rust inhibitors, stains, turpentines and thinners; driveway sealers; fluorescent lightbulbs; propane tanks; liquid mercury; and household cleaners, bleach and other corrosive or flammable compounds.<\/p>\n
Officials won\u2019t accept electric vehicle batteries, latex paints, explosives, electronics, tires, scrap metal, containers larger than 5 gallons or bags heavier than 40 pounds, among other items.<\/p>\n
Residents looking to dispose of hazardous waste items not on the list of accepted materials should call the environmental sustainability office at 570-963-2017.<\/p>\n
Businesses are not eligible for next month\u2019s collection event and commercial vehicles will not be permitted. Preregistered residents must arrive within 15 minutes of their appointment window or they\u2019ll be turned away; officials will check IDs.<\/p>\n
