The Democratic Party\u2019s voter registration advantage over Republicans in Pennsylvania\u2019s 8th Congressional District has grown by almost 2,800 since early February and by 1,151 since late July, state figures updated Monday show.<\/p>\n
The district that spans all of Lackawanna, Wayne and Pike and parts of Luzerne and Monroe counties features what\u2019s expected to be one of the nation\u2019s most competitive House races this cycle, the midterm matchup between incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan of Dallas Twp. and Democratic Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti. It\u2019s home to about 520,583 registered voters: 222,887 Democrats, 208,020 Republicans and 89,676 registered individuals who don\u2019t belong to either major party.<\/p>\n
Democrats\u2019 registration advantage over Republicans there stands at about 14,867, up from about 13,716 in late July, 12,372 in early May and 12,084 in early February. The positive trend for 8th District Democrats this year reverses what had been an eroding registration advantage.<\/p>\n
A point-in-time look, for example, shows Democrats outnumbered their Republican counterparts by more than 14,600 in the district as of about early June 2025. That advantage had shrunk by more than 2,500, to 12,084, by early February \u2014 weeks after the January killings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis and weeks before the beginning of the Trump administration\u2019s controversial war with Iran \u2014 but has grown by about 2,783 since Feb. 9.<\/p>\n
Those and other polarizing events, actions and policy decisions during the second Trump administration likely contributed to the fluctuating registration numbers. In general, the national political environment, success of party registration efforts, effectiveness of political messaging and advertising and other factors, including dynamics specific to individual races and districts, all bear on voter registration trends. The politically potent issue of data center development that\u2019s galvanized a large bipartisan opposition movement in the 8th District may also have contributed to the swing.<\/p>\n
The potential causes and contributing factors notwithstanding, the recent registration trend is good for local Democrats working to elect Cognetti and unseat Bresnahan, who overcame a Democratic voter registration advantage in 2024 to defeat longtime Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright by 6,252 votes.<\/p>\n
Bresnahan\u2019s reelection would bolster the GOP\u2019s chances of maintaining its narrow House majority in the next Congress, while a Cognetti victory would improve the Democratic Party\u2019s chances of regaining control of the lower chamber for the final two years of the second Trump administration.<\/p>\n
Both candidates are fighting for votes from registered Democrats and Republicans alike, and from independent or otherwise unaffiliated voters likely to play a key role in the midterm contest. The Bresnahan\/Cognetti race remains a toss-up with less than two months to go until the election Nov. 3, according to major race forecasters.<\/p>\n

Republicans, meanwhile, maintain a massive registration advantage of about 157,387 over Democrats in the sprawling 9th Congressional District, where incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser of Jackson Twp. faces a challenge from Democrat Rachel Wallace of East Brunswick Twp., Schuylkill County, this cycle. The GOP advantage over Democrats there stood at nearly 156,600 as of early June 2025.<\/p>\n
The 9th District spans all or parts of 12 counties, including all of Susquehanna, Wyoming and Schuylkill and part of Luzerne.<\/p>\n
Statewide, Democrats maintain a registration advantage over Republicans of 216,606, with state data showing 3,850,632 registered Democrats as of Monday compared to 3,634,026 Republicans.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s an increase from the end of 2025, when the statewide Democratic registration advantage stood at about 171,402, but the broader trend over roughly the past decade has been bad for Democrats. The Democratic Party had a statewide registration advantage of about 916,274 when President Donald Trump first won Pennsylvania and the presidency in 2016.<\/p>\n
