\t\t\tOBITUARY\t\t<\/p>\n
Edwin E. Rogers of Cortez, Jefferson Twp., whose byline \u201cEd E Rogers\u201d appeared on the pages of regional newspapers for more than 70 -years, died September 10, 2026 at Allied Services Hospice. He celebrated his 97th birthday on September 7 with family.<\/p>\n
\nHe was born in Carbondale on Sept. 7, 1929, son of William Earl and Jessie Pethick Rogers, days before the Market Crash sent the nation into the Great Depression. He and his late wife of 61 years, the former Eleanor Hopkins of Clarks Summit, reared their four children on their Huckleberry Hill Farm at Kizer Lake in Cortez.<\/p>\n
\nMr. Rogers began his journalism career in 1944 while still in high school when he was named sports editor of the daily Carbondale News Leader. Subsequently, he worked for The Scranton Tribune before joining The Scranton Times in 1953 as the Wayne County correspondent following two years in the army.<\/p>\n
\nHe became a staff writer the following year and served in that position until being promoted to state editor in 1966 and city editor in 1973. In 1980, he became managing editor, a position he held for 14 years. He had a major role in the introduction of the Sunday Times in 1966 and managed the news segment when the Morning Times was launched in 1988.<\/p>\n
\nThe Times purchased the competing Scrantonian Tribune in 1990 and overnight changed the name of its morning paper to the Scranton Tribune. Mr. Rogers continued as managing editor.<\/p>\n
\nBy 2005, when it became evident that the Scranton region could no longer support morning and afternoon publications, the Lynett family announced that their two papers would merge into one morning paper, The Times-Tribune which first rolled off the presses on July 27. Mr. Rogers had the honor of starting the presses for the final edition of The Scranton Times.<\/p>\n
\nMr. Rogers retired as managing editor of The Times papers in December 1994 and became founding editor of Good Times for Seniors, a bimonthly tabloid for mature readers published by Times-Shamrock. He continued in that position until May 2017 when he ended a journalism career that spanned 73 years.<\/p>\n
\nDuring the early days of his career, he doubled as a photographer toting a heavy Speed Graphic camera to accidents, fires, and other news events throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. He was the first on the scene when several blocks in the Carbondale business district were leveled by flames on a blustery day in February 1955.<\/p>\n
\nWhile managing editor of The Times he played an important role in relocating Steamtown USA from Bellows Falls, Vt., to Scranton and subsequent creation of the Steamtown National Historic Site in the former Lackawanna Railroad yards in downtown Scranton. He served on the Steamtown Foundation board and, at the invitation of the late Congressman Joseph McDade, testified twice before House committees in support of the creation of the national park. He was railroad chairman when the park was dedicated on July 4, 1995.<\/p>\n
\nHe served several terms as chairman of the Middle Atlantic Council of the National Park Service and edited a guide book for that organization. He also was a past president of the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors Association.<\/p>\n
\nMr. Rogers was an original member of the Lackawanna County Railroad Authority and served 23 years including numerous terms as chairman. The authority was responsible for preserving rail service in Lackawanna County and into the Poconos.<\/p>\n
\nHe also was active in broadcasting having done play-by-play broadcasts of high school basketball games and a sports program on WCDL, Carbondale. In addition, he was public address announcer for Carbondale Pioneer Blues North Atlantic League games at Russell Park for their first two seasons.<\/p>\n
\nIn their married life Ed and Eleanor traveled much of the world beginning with a three-week European honeymoon. Later they walked on the sands of Omaha Beach where 2,400 U.S. troops turned up dead, wounded or missing on D-Day \u2013 June 6, 1944, and through the row upon row of graves that line the American cemetery on the cliff overlooking the landing site.<\/p>\n
\nThey walked along the Great Wall of China, saw the more than 8,000 life size statues of the Terra-cotta Army buried at Xi\u2019an and cruised the Yangtze River from Chungking to the Three Gorges Dam.<\/p>\n
\nAmong their favorite destinations were the rivers of Europe and they cruised most of them from the Rhine to the Seine and the Danube; from Amsterdam and Paris to Geneva, Budapest and Belgrade. They sailed the Norwegian coast from Bergen north to the Russian border, crossing the Arctic Circle enroute, and ending in Helsinki, Finland.<\/p>\n
\nIn their later years many of their trips were as hosts with the Good Times Travel Club sponsored by Good Times for Seniors of which Mr. Rogers was editor.<\/p>\n
\nMr. Rogers was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and as church historian. He also served many years as a board member of the United Methodist Homes.<\/p>\n
\nHe was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, and is survived by the couple\u2019s four children, Karen Rogers Baker and Kevin (Cindy Lee), both of Cortez, Kyle (Renee Tibbets) of Pomfret, Maryland, and Kathryn Bauer (Steven) of Newtown, Pa.; a sister, Corolla Sawka of Dunmore; eight grandchildren, Nicholas and Kristopher Rogers; Katie and Jonathon Baker; Jacob, Russell, Andrea and Daniel Bauer.<\/p>\n
\nThe funeral will be Saturday with services at 11:00 A.M. in Elm Park United Methodist Church 712 Linden Street Scranton. Interment Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Elmhurst. Friends may call Friday from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Albert P. O\u2019Donnell Funeral Home 2025 Green Ridge Street Dunmore. Friends may also call Saturday at Elm Park United Methodist Church from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Memorial contributions may be made in Ed\u2019s honor to the Steamtown National Historic Site.<\/p>\n
