PITTSBURGH \u2014 The fifth annual Disability Pride Pittsburgh celebration is scheduled for next weekend.<\/p>\n
It will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Schenley Plaza, located at 4100 Forbes Ave.<\/p>\n
The event is free, open to the public and organized by a disability-led team focusing on community access.<\/p>\n
The lineup for the afternoon event includes a DJ, biking demonstrations, face painting, airbrush tattoos, resources and more than 50 vendors, marking the event\u2019s largest vendor roster to date. No registration is required for the gathering, which will take place rain or shine.<\/p>\n
Organizers designed the celebration around accessibility in the public space. Features for attendees include American Sign Language interpretation, a visual guide, extra shaded seating, clear signage throughout Schenley Plaza and two ADA-compliant portable toilets. A sensory space will also be available inside the Carnegie Library.<\/p>\n
Event organizers are avoiding latex balloons and using non-toxic products for face painting and airbrush tattoos. Masking is encouraged, with masks and earplugs available at the Disability Pride table. <\/p>\n
Vicki Landers is the founder and executive director of Disability Pride Pennsylvania. Landers highlighted the importance of centering accessibility in community planning. <\/p>\n
\u201cDisability Pride is about claiming our place in Pittsburgh\u2019s story,\u201d Landers said. \u201cWhen we plan with access, we create a better public space for everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n
Landers emphasized the permanent presence of the disability community in the region. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe belong here and we\u2019re here to stay,\u201d Landers said.<\/p>\n
