PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A growing number of Philadelphia residents are facing steep energy cost increases at a time when many are already struggling to keep up with monthly bills.

Gaudy Worthy of Bridesburg is facing a shutoff warning.

“Right now I have a ten-day notice. A ten-day shutoff notice,” she said.

Worthy was laid off from her Amazon job in July, and she said the financial pressure is mounting.

“Sometimes you have to think about whether you’re going to eat or whether you’ll have electric in your home,” she said. “That’s the situation that we’re in now.”

Worthy sought help at Hace, a nonprofit organization in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia. Amanda Garayua, director of housing services, said demand for assistance is rising.

“A lot of people are coming to us in crisis mode,” she said.

Garayua said Hace operates as a neighborhood energy center, with funding from the Energy Coordinating Agency.

Employees work to help residents apply for LIHEAP and crisis programs.

“LIHEAP comes around from November to April, and it helps people get utility assistance once a year for gas and electric.

New projections show oil heating costs could rise more than 30 percent, driven by the war with Iran. Families using electricity for heat could see a 9% increase.

Gasoline prices are also rising. The national average for a gallon is $4.32, and drivers in the region are paying between 4 and 22 cents more.

In Wynnefield, Dave Bone said he shopped around to find the lowest price nearby, but it still stings.

“$4.39 based on Google Maps, says it’s the lowest in the neighborhood, but it’s up a lot,” he said.

Experts say higher oil prices could also push up the cost of transporting goods, leaving consumers to foot the bill for additional increases on everyday purchases.
