BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) \u2014 The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded $44,696,208 Tuesday, Sept. 15, to organizations across Pennsylvania to support homeless and at-risk veterans.<\/p>\n
The funding is part of a record-high $1.17 billion awarded to 680 organizations nationwide to fight Veteran homelessness. In 2025, the VA managed to house 51,936 homeless Veterans, the highest number in seven years.<\/p>\n
The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program will distribute resources and supportive services grants to:<\/p>\n
Prevent the imminent loss of a home.<\/p>\n
Identify new, more sustainable housing situations for Veterans and families.<\/p>\n
Rapidly re-house Veterans and their families who are homeless and might remain homeless without assistance.<\/p>\n
The agency’s Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program will distribute funding for transitional housing and intensive supportive services to:<\/p>\n
Fund transitional housing with supportive services or service centers.<\/p>\n
Support transition-in-place housing, where Veterans remain in their current housing unit while receiving services to help them move toward permanent, stable housing.<\/p>\n
Provide special housing designed to better serve women Veterans and those who are chronically mentally ill, frail or elderly.<\/p>\n
“VA medical centers across Pennsylvania remain committed to ensuring Veterans have access to safe, stable housing and the supportive services they need to thrive,” said Interim Medical Center Director of the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center David DiGiacomo. “These grants strengthen our partnership with community organizations and help us reach Veterans where they are, providing resources that make a meaningful difference in their lives.”<\/p>\n
