Cleveland\u2019s got serious work to do, like remaining a portion of Lake Erie.<\/p>\n

Cleveland\u2019s City Council wants to call part of the great lake the \u201cGulf of Cleveland,\u201d which NBC News reported<\/a> was a satirical move poking fun at Trump\u2019s renaming crusade.<\/p>\n

Trump has dubbed the Gulf of Mexico the \u201cGulf of America,\u201d and Lake Ontario \u201cLake America.\u201d He also floated the idea of renaming New Mexico \u201cNew America.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cleveland resolution passed 13-1 does not have the force of law, according to NBC News.<\/p>\n

The \u201cGulf of Cleveland\u201d was spearheaded by Cleveland councilmember Kris Harsh, saying Trump \u201cis a man who clearly isn\u2019t afraid to say what no one is thinking,\u201d NBC News reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel emboldened to take the extraordinary step of renaming Lake Erie as the Gulf of Cleveland today,\u201d he said during his remarks Monday at the council meeting<\/a>. \u201cKeep in mind, there\u2019s a very real person in Pennsylvania right now who wants to rename it the Lake of Pennsylvania. We cannot, as Ohioans, let the Pennsylvanians get a jump on us. It\u2019s our lake.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was referring to Pennsylvania state Rep. David Maloney, a Republican representing part of Berks County, who has said he\u2019s preparing a resolution<\/a> to urge Trump to rename Lake Erie \u201cLake Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the council meeting, Harsh acknowledged that Lake Erie is not a gulf, according to NBC News.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I say, \u2018Who cares?\u2019\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cListen to me very carefully and jot this down: Words don\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWords don\u2019t matter, but the whims of powerful white men like me do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the council meeting, Harsh told NBC News in an interview that \u201csometimes it seems like nationally the administration is equal parts cruel and absurd.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I thought naming Lake Erie the \u2018Gulf of Cleveland\u2019 would be, just perhaps \u2014 perhaps pull back the curtain a little bit and let people see how absurd this entire thing has become.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cleveland\u2019s got serious work to do, like remaining a portion of Lake Erie.
