<\/p>\nA unanimous vote by the Lackawanna County Commissioners will see the $296,000 project move forward.<\/p>\n
SCRANTON, Pa. \u2014 Chunks of missing stone and long cracks in the facade of the Lackawanna County Children’s Library in Scranton have been a nuisance for months.<\/p>\n
Since the problem started, scaffolding and barricades have gone up out front of the library. This led library staff to close off part of the main walkway after safety concerns arose.<\/p>\n

But soon parents and kids won’t have to worry as they walk up the front steps; thanks to a unanimous vote from Lackawanna County Commissioners on Wednesday, the problem will soon be fixed.<\/p>\n
“With a total construction bid of $296,000 for the base bid plus alternate,” said county Chief of Staff Brian Jeffers as he read out the approved motion.<\/p>\n
County engineer Frank Summa explained the work needed. “The bid includes replacing missing stones, resetting loose stones, and repairing cracks in the masonry facade.”<\/p>\n
At a total cost of $296,000, the missing pieces will be replaced, cracks filled, and the scaffolding and barricades removed.<\/p>\n
Scott Thomas, the CEO at the Scranton Public Library, says the property along Vine Street is over 100 years old and needed a tune-up.<\/p>\n
“The problem is that the facade cracks appeared over the front entrance, one of the worst places, um, that you can have something like that, so it was a safety issue immediately, so we had to shut down the front entrance of a children’s library,” said Thomas.<\/p>\n
Soon, Thomas hopes the building will return to a community space and not look like a construction zone.<\/p>\n
“That’s not very attractive,” said Thomas. “Kids don’t want to come into a place with scaffolding in front of it, so we’re, we’re very eager to get this fixed.”<\/p>\n
