five University of Scranton alumni\u00a0and\u00a032\u00a0loved ones of\u00a0students and graduates<\/a>\u00a0lost their lives.\u00a0Rev. Joseph M.\u00a0McShane,\u00a0S.J., H\u201904,\u00a0the Superior for the Scranton Jesuit Community,\u00a0was\u00a0president of\u00a0The University of Scranton at the time and\u00a0became deeply involved with honoring those who lost their lives, by organizing Masses and attending numerous funerals and memorial services.<\/p>\n\u201cPart of the core mission of Jesuit education\u00a0is\u00a0to be a person for others and to act on behalf of others\u00a0even\u00a0when it is difficult,\u201d said\u00a0Casey, who graduated from Jesuit institutions Scranton Preparatory School and the College of the Holy Cross.\u00a0\u201cMuch of the Jesuit philosophy and what is in Jesuit teachings are directly connected to service and sacrificing on behalf of others.\u201d<\/p>\n
When asked what University of Scranton students should\u00a0take away from\u00a0the 25th\u00a0anniversary\u00a0of\u00a0Sept.11, Casey\u00a0stated that despite\u00a0the grief felt nationwide,\u00a0individuals\u00a0should\u00a0let the bravery of those who\u00a0put their lives at risk\u00a0propel us forward and challenge us\u00a0to serve others and live up to the obligations we have to our communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important for students to study what happened on 9\/11, to remember those lost, to be cognizant of the evil that exists in our world, and to emulate the example of service and sacrifice of so many Americans on that awful day and thereafter,\u201d Casey said.<\/p>\n
When Casey\u2019s father,\u00a0Bob Casey Sr.,\u00a0gave his\u00a0gubernatorial\u00a0inauguration speech in 1991,\u00a0he did so amid another anxious time when U.S. troops were readying for deployment to Iraq.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe pray for them, but we also pray for ourselves, that we may be worthy of their valor,\u201d Casey Sr.\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
Casey\u00a0expanded on\u00a0his father\u2019s message, which has stayed with him for 35-plus years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to be worthy of all that valor\u00a0\u2026\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0got to prove it.\u00a0You\u2019ve\u00a0got to prove it every day as a citizen,\u201d Casey said.<\/p>\n
Casey said that responsibility includes being a positive force within one\u2019s community and family by voting, treating others with respect and doing good every day.<\/p>\n
As the Leahy Distinguished Fellow in Public Service, Casey strives to\u00a0model\u00a0the qualities he admired in those who lost their lives 25 years ago. It is the way, he said, one could prove worthy of their valor.<\/p>\n
