As cleanup efforts continue across Erie following last week’s devastating storm, Erie City Council has approved transferring $4 million from the city’s reserve funds to help cover the mounting costs of recovery.<\/p>\n
Council members voted Wednesday night to move the funds into the city’s general fund, where the money will be used to pay for debris removal, equipment expenses, and overtime costs associated with the emergency response.<\/p>\n
The full extent of the storm’s impact is becoming clearer as city crews continue assessments throughout Erie. According to city officials, more than 900 residential service calls have been received since the storm struck, and as many as 1,000 trees were damaged or destroyed across the city.<\/p>\n
Mayor Daria Devlin outlined the growing costs tied to the cleanup effort and explained that the funding will come from the city’s approximately $32 million rainy day reserve fund.<\/p>\n
The storm left widespread destruction across the city, damaging homes and private property while also severely impacting public infrastructure. Officials estimate that roughly 10 percent of the city’s tree canopy was lost, while 152 streets were closed in the aftermath of the storm. Significant damage was also reported at four community facilities.<\/p>\n
Despite the substantial expense, city leaders are hopeful that much of the emergency response cost will eventually be reimbursed through state and federal disaster assistance programs.<\/p>\n
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) arrived in Erie four days after the storm to assess the extent of the damage and evaluate the city’s response efforts.<\/p>\n
City officials say FEMA has indicated that Erie could qualify for reimbursement of eligible expenses related to storm response and cleanup operations, potentially helping offset the costs currently being covered through the city’s reserve funds.<\/p>\n
