The state of Pennsylvania<\/a> announced Thursday that it will direct $32 million in federal investments to build electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the eastern region of Pennsylvania as part of the Community Charging<\/a> phase of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI<\/a>) program. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Applications will be accepted until March 12, 2027. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Through the Community Charging funding rounds, the\u00a0state is directing over $100 million\u00a0 in federal funding to build public EV charging stations in Pennsylvania communities, in addition to the $58 million already invested in the state\u2019s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) and Corridor Connections. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Last week, the Shapiro Administration<\/a> opened the 50th NEVI-funded EV charging station at Sheetz<\/a> on Linglestown Road<\/a> in Harrisburg<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a038 more stations are in various stages of planning and construction. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this investment, the Shapiro Administration has opened EV charger funding for every Pennsylvania community,\u201d said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, speaking at the announcement in Bethlehem<\/a>. \u201cCharger accessibility is the most critical element of EV adoption. We\u2019re excited to be on the forefront of providing that for PA travelers.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u00a0Since Pennsylvania\u2019s first NEVI station opened in December 2023, NEVI-funded charging stations in Pennsylvania have supported over 146,000 charging sessions, over 17.3 million estimated miles driven, and reduced CO2 emissions by more than 3,700 metric tons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe spent a lot of time in workshops, listening sessions and through a survey asking people where they want to see charging stations,\u201d said Lehigh Valley Planning Commission Executive Director Becky Bradley. \u201cWhat we heard is that convenience and accessibility really matter. People want charging where they\u2019re already going \u2014 where they shop, work and recreate.
