(Photo by Carl Hessler Jr. \u2013 MediaNews Group)<\/p>\nNORRISTOWN \u2014 A Philadelphia man is on his way to prison for stabbing and stomping on another man during a disturbance that began on a SEPTA bus in Cheltenham Township and left the victim with lacerations on his face and a broken jaw.<\/p>\n
Isaiah Castro, 29, of the 5700 block of Kingseesing Avenue, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to 14 to 28 months in a state correctional facility on a felony charge of aggravated assault in connection with the Jan. 11, 2026, incident on a Southeastern Transportation Authority bus traveling in Cheltenham.<\/p>\n
With three years of probation, consecutive to parole, the sentence means Castro will be under court supervision for more than five years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a gentleman on the bus who should have had the ability to feel safe,\u201d Judge Thomas M. DelRicci said as he imposed the punishment.<\/p>\n
The victim, who did not know Castro, told the judge that he was hospitalized for a week and treated for a broken jaw. The man testified his mouth was wired shut for about a month and doctors had to reconstruct his jaw and realign his teeth.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was on pain medicine for that whole month,\u201d the man told the judge, adding he has suffered some memory loss as a result of the beating.<\/p>\n
A second man, Raheem Tabir Jame Tyson, who was Castro\u2019s friend, also was charged in connection with the assault, specifically with punching the victim.<\/p>\n
Tyson, 31, also of Philadelphia, previously was sentenced to 8 to 23 months in the county jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault as part of a plea agreement.<\/p>\n
Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Shortridge argued for a state prison sentence for Castro, maintaining he was more culpable in the assault.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was an unprovoked attack. It was random and unprovoked,\u201d Shortridge argued.<\/p>\n
Authorities alleged the attack occurred when the victim, who prosecutors described as a \u201cGood Samaritan,\u201d tried to quell a verbal argument that Castro and Tyson had with others on the bus, including the bus driver.<\/p>\n
\u201cCulpability was very important. (Castro\u2019s) role was more involved in the attack. He initiated the physical part of the attack. He not only stabbed (the victim) on the bus he then kicked him on the head very hard outside the bus. We believe the culpability for this defendant (Castro) was higher,\u201d Shortridge said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe victim was essentially trying to help a fellow citizen and unfortunately this defendant (Castro) decided to escalate it to extreme violence,\u201d Shortridge said.<\/p>\n

Defense lawyer Kenneth C. Edelin Jr. asked the judge to consider sentencing Castro to a more mitigated county jail term.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe accepted responsibility and threw himself at the mercy of the court,\u201d said Edelin, referring to Castro\u2019s guilty plea in the case. \u201cHe has been remorseful. He has been regretful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Edelin argued Castro has a history of substance abuse and mental health issues since childhood, including suffering from personality, bipolar and anxiety disorders.<\/p>\n
DelRicci explained he considered Castro\u2019s mental health issues but added, \u201cThey can\u2019t excuse the conduct. They don\u2019t take away from the pain that the victim had to endure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before learning his fate, Castro apologized to the victim.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never meant for this whole situation to get out of control,\u201d said Castro, claiming he has had suicidal thoughts. \u201cI can\u2019t even look at myself in the mirror. I\u2019m disgusted by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
The investigation began about 8:07 a.m. Jan. 11 when Cheltenham Township police responded to the area of Breyer Drive and Old York Road for a report of a man being stabbed on a SEPTA bus.<\/p>\n
\u201cResponding officers located the victim, who was lying unconscious on the sidewalk outside of the SEPTA Route 55 bus, which was parked on Old York Road, just south of Breyer Drive. The victim\u2026was suffering from stab wounds and lacerations to his head and face,\u201d Cheltenham Township Detective Ryan Murray alleged in the arrest affidavit, adding the victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.<\/p>\n
Officers observed Castro and Tyson fleeing on foot toward Meetinghouse Road and they were taken into custody a short time later without incident. Officers found a knife in Castro\u2019s hooded sweatshirt, according to court documents.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the tip of the blade is noticeable blood,\u201d Murray alleged, adding Castro and Tyson each \u201chad fresh blood on their hands, clothing and shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the investigation, SEPTA police recovered video surveillance from inside the bus that recorded the assault. The judge reviewed the video recordings during the sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n
According to court papers, the video depicted the victim boarding the bus at 7:35 a.m. Castro and Tyson boarded the bus at 7:42 a.m. and engaged in a verbal dispute with the female bus driver.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring an interview with the bus driver, she stated this dispute was over Tyson and Castro failing to pay the full fare but she ultimately let them both board the bus for free,\u201d Murray alleged.<\/p>\n
At 7:43 a.m. Castro and Tyson began arguing with each other and then exchanged words with the victim and a fourth unidentified male, according to court papers.<\/p>\n
Detectives said the video surveillance footage depicted Tyson and the victim engage each other in conversation again at 8:03 a.m. and Tyson leaves his seat and sits in the seat next to the victim and \u201cboth appear to have a calm conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCastro leaves his seat as well and takes a standing position behind both the victim and Tyson. Castro has his left hand concealed in the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt while monitoring the conversation between the victim and Tyson,\u201d Murray alleged.<\/p>\n
Castro removed a knife from his pocket and then stabbed the victim multiple times in the left side of his face and head as Tyson at one point held the victim up against the window of the bus, according to the arrest affidavit.<\/p>\n
Castro then fled by exiting the bus followed by the victim at 8:05 a.m. and the pair engaged in conversation on the sidewalk as Tyson exited the bus and approached the victim from behind.<\/p>\n
\u201cTyson then winds back his right fist and strikes the victim in the face. The victim appears to immediately lose consciousness and falls to the ground,\u201d Murray alleged.<\/p>\n
Castro then proceeded to stomp on the face of the victim as he was on the ground, authorities alleged.<\/p>\n
