ALLENTOWN, Pa.- Mack Defense has earned an important stamp of approval from the federal government.<\/p>\n
The company, which makes heavy duty vehicles for U.S. defense and military operations, has\u00a0achieved Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2.<\/p>\n
CMMC certification is a mandatory requirement for contractors who work with the\u00a0Department of War (DOW; formerly the Department of Defense). It ensures that contractors have procedures in place to safeguard\u00a0Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), which is information that the government deems sensitive enough to require some protection without meeting the standards of top secret classified information.<\/p>\n
The CMMC certification process is carried out by a third party; in Mack Defense’s case, it was conducted by\u00a0A-LIGN, a\u00a0global cybersecurity compliance and audit firm.<\/p>\n
The CMMC program was introduced in 2020 and updated to CMMC 2.0 in 2021. Phase 1 of the rollout of the latest model became operational in 2025.<\/p>\n
There are three tiers- levels 1, 2 and 3- under the current framework, with Level 3 having the most stringent requirements. According to documents from the DOD in 2024, a company seeking Level 1 certification must meet 15 requirements. That number increases to 110 in Level 2, and to 134 in Level 3.<\/p>\n
This is Mack Defense\u2019s first formal CMMC designation. “While Mack Defense has long maintained strong cybersecurity practices aligned with the requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), this marks the first time those practices were independently assessed and certified through the official CMMC Level 2 process,” a company spokesperson told 69 News in an email.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Formal third-party assessments under the current framework only became available more recently, with voluntary Level 2 certifications beginning last year.<\/p>\n
“Achieving CMMC Level 2 positions Mack Defense to continue supporting existing defense programs while pursuing future opportunities that require certified cybersecurity compliance,” the company said in a news release.<\/p>\n
In July, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced he was suspending the CMMC Phase 2 rollout over concerns the requirements placed heavy financial and administrative burdens on small defense contractors.<\/p>\n
The Phase 1 requirements remain in place while the DOW reviews the program.<\/p>\n
Mack Defense is a subsidiary of Mack Trucks. Since 2021, it has operated a production line at the Mack Experience Center in Allentown. The facility is separate from Mack Truck’s production facility in Lower Macungie Township, known as its Lehigh Valley Operations, or LVO.<\/p>\n
In July, Mack Defense said the U.S. Army had placed a new order for\u00a0115 heavy duty dump trucks. That came on the heels of a 91-truck order in June, when it also was announced that Mack Defense was getting $47 million in funding from the 2026 Department of Defense Appropriations Act.<\/p>\n
Those recent orders are part of the five-year contract awarded in June 2025 to Mack Defense for up to 450 trucks, with a total contract value of up to $221.8 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN, Pa.- Mack Defense has earned an important stamp of approval from the federal government.
