{"id":288451,"date":"2026-09-17T21:50:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T21:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/288451\/"},"modified":"2026-09-17T21:50:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T21:50:10","slug":"fourth-measles-death-in-pennsylvania-now-most-infections-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/288451\/","title":{"rendered":"Fourth Measles Death in Pennsylvania, Now Most Infections in US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fourth measles death in Pennsylvania comes as the state\u2019s outbreak is now the worst in the United States.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h-pennsylvania-health-officials-have-reported-a-fourth-measles-related-death-in-the-state-which-has-become-home-to-the-most-confirmed-measles-infections-in-the-us-in-2026\">Pennsylvania health officials have reported a fourth measles-related death in the state, which has become home to the most confirmed measles infections in the US in 2026. <\/p>\n<p id=\"h-pennsylvania-health-officials-have-reported-a-fourth-measles-related-death-in-the-state-according-to-the-associated-press-t-death-involved-an-18-year-old-resident-of-mifflin-county-in-the-center-of-the-state-the-county-coroner-s-office-said-in-a-facebook-post-the-cause-was-acute-disseminated-encephalomyelitis-a-rare-and-severe-neurological-complication-of-measles-it-said\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-deaths-pennsylvania-5267e2deff65b12941e6a1c279976f13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">According to the Associated Press<\/a>, the latest death was an unvaccinated 18-year-old in Central Pennsylvania who died due to acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, which is a rare and severe neurological complication of measles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/respiratory-therapy.com\/disorders-diseases\/infectious-diseases\/other-infections\/2-measles-deaths-pennsylvania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Two deaths<\/a> were reported in August. A <a href=\"https:\/\/respiratory-therapy.com\/disorders-diseases\/infectious-diseases\/other-infections\/third-measles-related-death-reported-in-pennsylvania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">third death<\/a> was reported on September 14. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, there have been 731 confirmed measles cases,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/health\/diseases-conditions\/infectious-disease\/measles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">as of Sept 16 data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That number is now the most confirmed infections in the United States in 2026, surpassing South Carolina\u2019s 670 cases.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government continues to dispute Pennsylvania\u2019s reported measles-related deaths. The CDC measles database continues to list an asterisk (*) under its measles death total, explaining that, \u201c*The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) does not currently have any death records from 2026 that indicate measles is the underlying cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/respiratory-therapy.com\/disorders-diseases\/infectious-diseases\/other-infections\/united-states-measles-cases-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As of September 11 data<\/a>\u00a0released by the CDC, the United States has documented 3,294 cases of measles.
