(Emily Neil\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Turnbull, co-executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiralq.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spiral Q<\/a>, which organizes the parade and spends months building the artworks exhibited in both the parade and pageant, told the crowd that the event is \u201ca handmade and people-powered celebration of solidarity, creativity and courage.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeoplehood is not just a single day. (Emily Neil\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>Themes of this year\u2019s parade and pageant, Turnbull said, are centered, as they always are, on \u201cprotecting our communities.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about making sure that all of our folks have access to their basic needs,\u201d they said. \u201cAnd it is when people don\u2019t have access to their basic needs and being able to have freedom of expression, that\u2019s when things start to break down \u2026 That\u2019s what Spiral Q has always been about, making sure that our stories are told and heard and that we have agency to advocate for ourselves.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Angelita Ellison, of Sharswood, marched in the parade for the first time. She participated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bsncphilly\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brewerytown Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition<\/a>, advocating for affordable housing.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI volunteer with them and in their housing committee, and we\u2019re very interested in the <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/home-housing-budget-plan-philadelphia-mayor-cherelle-parker-explainer\/#:~:text=The%20proposal%20calls%20for%20%2425,crisis%20across%20all%20income%20levels.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mayor\u2019s H.O.M.E program<\/a> and how that\u2019s gonna affect the city,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we would just like to have that program focus on the folks who need it the most, lower income Philadelphians.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-722096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/peoplehood-parade-25-11-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"People hold signs advocating for affordable housing in the 25th annual Peoplehood Parade in West Philadelphia\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"  \/>Hundreds of people representing 42 groups marched in the 25th annual Peoplehood Parade, advocating for a number of different causes.
