WILLIAMS TWP., Pa.- Northampton County will rename one of its parks in honor of two open space preservation pioneers.<\/p>\n
Fry’s Run Park in Williams Township will be known as the Mineo Conservation Area, recognizing the contributions of husband and wife Isidore “Bill” Mineo and Lorraine Mineo.<\/p>\n
The resolution to make the change received enthusiastic and unanimous support from Northampton County Council during its regular meeting on Thursday night.<\/p>\n
“Thank you, county executive,\u00a0for doing this,” said Commissioner Lori Vargo Heffner.<\/p>\n
“It is so long overdue. There are\u00a0no two more deserving people in this county to get this to happen for them. So thank you very much. It’s well overdue and well deserved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The resolution council approved reads, in part:<\/p>\n
“Bill and Lorraine Mineo provided a lifetime of dedication and devotion to land conservation, ecological restoration, natural and cultural resource preservation, and greenway and watershed protection. Their passion for public lands and waterways was to enhance wildlife, water quality, and native habitat, and to provide education and recreation for people of all ages and future generations, making them deserving of recognition.”<\/p>\n

Bill served as the executive director of the Northampton County Park Board in 1974, and then as superintendent of parks and recreation when the county was reorganized under a home rule charter in 1978.<\/p>\n
Lorraine, a former Lafayette College professor, was instrumental in working with Bill to establish organizations like the Lehigh Valley Conservancy (now the Wildlands Conservancy), the D&L National Heritage Corridor and the Northampton County Open Space Advisory Board, the resolution says.<\/p>\n
According to its website, Fry’s Run Park was dedicated on September 21, 1977, making it the second park in the then-new Northampton County Parks System, behind Minsi Lake.<\/p>\n
The park is now nearly six acres and includes land that once was the site of a sawmill built by George Kleinhaus in 1762.<\/p>\n
Bill Mineo died in 2018.
