Downtown Erie celebrated two new public artworks from a project highlighting the city’s history.<\/p>\n
Two new additions to the Hidden Creeks Project were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning.<\/p>\n
The Hidden Creeks Project is a multi-year initiative designed to educate the public about the buried waters of Mill Creek beneath the city.<\/p>\n
Crowds gathered on the Erie Insurance Arena lawn for the reveal.<\/p>\n
Local artists, historians, and environmental scientists worked together to tell the story of the 1915 Mill Creek flood, the evolution of the Mill Creek Tube, and recent efforts to protect the region’s natural waterways.<\/p>\n
The artwork will continue along Mill Creek’s buried path through 2028 as part of the Hidden Creeks Project.<\/p>\n
“Discussion started because we want there to be folks talking about what happened in Erie’s past that led to the creek being buried beneath the city. But then, how do we individually have an impact on the health of that water? Because that water flows to the lake, which is where we get our municipal water. So our daily choices actually do make an impact on our water’s health.” Kristen Currier, an Environmental Educator for Erie County Conservation District said.<\/p>\n
