CLARKS SUMMIT \u2013 Evan Keiper made a few game-changing plays for Abington Heights and Jayden Anglin carried the Comets to a victory.<\/p>\n
Keiper returned a kickoff for a touchdown and had two interceptions while Anglin rushed for 224 yards and scored three total touchdowns to lead No. 10 Abington Heights to a 29-13 win over West Scranton in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division I game Friday at Abington Heights High School.<\/p>\n
Anglin scored on his first touch of the game, taking a handoff off left tackle and bursting into the open field on the game\u2019s first play from scrimmage. Anglin then broke free from a tackler near the 30-yard line and covered 66 yards in total to give the Comets (2-2, 1-0) a 7-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s something I really pride my game on: not letting the first person take me down and breaking tackles, getting those extra yards,\u201d Anglin said.<\/p>\n
On the Comets\u2019 next possession, Anglin had five carries for 42 yards and then, on third-and-goal from the 5, took a shovel pass from quarterback Gavin Shay and reached the endzone to push the lead to 13-0.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a workhorse,\u201d Abington Heights head coach Joe Repshis said. \u201cYou have to credit up front. The guys give him a crease and he has the ability, great vision, great balance, great strength and that\u2019s on display when he has the ball in his hands. A very gifted and talented football player in all phases of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Quincy Mosley set up West Scranton (2-2, 0-1) in good field position on its next drive when he returned the kickoff 47 yards to the Comets\u2019 43. On the drive, the Invaders converted a fourth-and-7 when Austin Sostre hit Kaz Colbert for an 11-yard completion and then the pair connected again for a 30-yard gain on third-and-29. Later, Sostre picked up 6 yards on the ground on fourth-and-1 and then on the next play, dove in for a 3-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 13-6.<\/p>\n
With West Scranton seizing the momentum, Keiper grabbed it back for the Comets. The senior took the ensuing kickoff up the middle and broke free for an 85-yard return for a touchdown with 2.1 seconds left in the first quarter.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just caught the ball and my teammates blocked amazingly for me,\u201d Keiper said. \u201cI saw the hole and I took off. I got a little gassed at the end; I had to fall into the endzone and make it a little cinematic. An awesome experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
After allowing 27 points in the first quarter, both defenses stiffened in the second.<\/p>\n
Each team punted on its first possession of the second quarter and West Scranton was forced to punt on its second drive but Michael O\u2019Boyle broke in from the right side and blocked the kick and the Comets recovered at West Scranton\u2019s 22. But the Invaders\u2019 defense held again and forced a field goal attempt that was off the mark with 30 seconds left in the first half.<\/p>\n
Sostre completed three passes as West Scranton drove to the Abington Heights 30 midway through the third quarter. But Keiper made a diving interception to the end the drive.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey ran a few verticals and I saw he threw off to the side and I went and got it,\u201d Keiper said.<\/p>\n
West Scranton rebounded and drove 58 yards in six plays on its next drive and Sostre hit Colbert in the endzone on fourth down to cut the deficit to 20-13 with 1:31 left in the third quarter.<\/p>\n
Rodman Azar booted a 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and then Anglin broke a 45-yard touchdown run with 5:52 remaining. Anglin first went left and hit a wall, then reversed to his right and found an opening.<\/p>\n
Keiper came up with his second interception on West Scranton\u2019s next drive when he out-jumped the receiver on a flea-flicker pass down the right sideline.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe work hard,\u201d Keiper said. \u201cWe just love tackling, we love hitting. We\u2019re a physical team.
