United Way of Buffalo and Erie County is hosting free
\nworkshops for disaster preparedness in September and October

Western New Yorkers know how
\nquickly severe weather can create dangerous conditions. The 2022 blizzard
\nshowed the ways an emergency can
\nimpact neighbors and how important
\ncommunity resilience is.
\nDisaster preparedness isn\u2019t just
\nabout individuals. It\u2019s about how
\nprepared Buffalo residents are as a
\ncommunity.
\nUnited Way of Buffalo and Erie
\nCounty is answering the call and helping
\nindividuals, families and communities
\nbuild resilience through preparedness
\nworkshops being hosted in September
\nand October across the county.
\nThe one-hour-long workshops are
\nbeing facilitated by the American Red
\nCross on the following dates: Sept. 21
\nand 30 and Oct. 3, 7, 17, 24, 25 and 31.
\nWhat workshop attendees can expect:
\n\u2022 Where to find accurate,
\nreliable information during an
\nemergency
\n\u2022 How to prepare your home for
\nfires, winter storms and other
\nemergencies
\n\u2022 Explore the contents of a
\ndisaster resilience kit
\n\u2022 Speak with disaster preparedness
\nexperts and get your questions
\nanswered
\nWorkshop attendees will also receive a free disaster resilience kit. The
\nkit provides some of the basic resources people may need during an emergency, including a flashlight, batteries,
\na portable radio, hand warmers and
\nother items.
\n\u201cThe kit is a starting point. We
\nwant people to use it along with what
\nthey learn at our workshops to create<\/p>\n

a preparedness plan for their family,\u201d
\nsaid Trina Burruss, president and CEO
\nof the United Way of Buffalo and Erie
\nCounty. \u201cResilience means preparing
\nbefore something happens, but also
\nhaving the resources to respond when
\nour neighbors need us.\u201d
\nThe workshops are part of a local effort connected to United Way
\nWorldwide\u2019s United We Prepare initiative. United Way of Buffalo and Erie
\nCounty received a $250,000 Disaster
\nResilience Grant from United Way<\/p>\n
Worldwide, with support from Verizon.
\n\u201cWe were selected as one of a limited number of United Ways nationwide
\nbecause of our focus on building community resilience,\u201d said Burruss.
\nFor Western New Yorkers, the upcoming workshops offer a free, practical way to start preparing before the
\nnext major storm arrives.
\n\u201cWe can\u2019t always predict when the
\nnext emergency will happen, but we
\ncan prepare. With the support of Verizon and United Way Worldwide, we\u2019re<\/p>\n
bringing resources directly into our
\nneighborhoods,\u201d said Burruss. \u201cUnited
\nWe Prepare is about making sure our
\ncommunity has the tools and resources
\nto be ready and build a stronger, more
\nresilient Western New York.\u201d
