Downtown Pittsburgh is preparing for the return of its annual Oktoberfest celebration,<\/a> and organizers say this year’s event will be the biggest yet.<\/p>\n

The 11-day festival, rebranded as “Prostburgh,” will take over Market Square, the Roberto Clemente Bridge and other parts of the Golden Triangle from Oct. 1 through Oct. 11. Organizers say the event blends traditional Bavarian culture with Pittsburgh flair through food, music, games and family-friendly attractions.<\/p>\n

One of the festival’s most recognizable attractions is returning: the 60-foot Ferris wheel on the Roberto Clemente Bridge. Riders can take in views of downtown Pittsburgh and the North Shore during 10-minute rides while enjoying what organizers describe as a uniquely Pittsburgh Oktoberfest experience.<\/p>\n

Visitors can also expect the return of crowd favorites including Dachshund races, stein-holding competitions, axe throwing, the Devil’s Wheel ride and activities for children in the Kinderplay area. Live polka bands and contemporary music performances will take place throughout the festival, while vendors serve German-inspired fare including bratwurst, pretzels and imported beers.<\/p>\n

Festival organizers say the “Prostburgh” branding is meant to create a uniquely local identity while celebrating Oktoberfest traditions. Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership President and CEO Jeremy Waldrup said organizers hope the event continues growing into a signature fall tradition for the region.<\/p>\n

County officials are also embracing the event. Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato said Oktoberfest has quickly become a popular downtown attraction that brings visitors to local businesses while offering entertainment for families.<\/p>\n

With skyline views from the Ferris wheel, racing dachshunds, German food and live entertainment, organizers are expecting thousands of visitors to head downtown when Prostburgh kicks off next month.<\/p>\n
