On the inside, The Puma held off Further Ado<\/p>\n
BENSALEM, Pennsylvania (Special for Turf Diario).\u2014 The Puma spent a good portion of the season trying to recapture what seemed within his reach during the spring. At Parx Racing, he finally brought everything full circle. The Gustavo Delgado colt captured the Pennsylvania Derby (G1-1800m, $1,000,000) this Saturday, holding off by half a length the late charge of Further Ado (Gun Runner) to claim that top-flight victory he had been chasing for six months.<\/p>\n
The win also produced a landmark milestone for his sire: The Puma became the first Grade 1 winner for Essential Quality, the champion who thus began finding a major response in his still-young career at stud.<\/p>\n
The road to Parx was far from simple. In March, The Puma had dropped a agonizing nose decision to Commandment(Into Mischief) in the Florida Derby (G1), a performance that firmly placed him among the elite colts of his generation and fueled grand expectations for the Kentucky Derby (G1).<\/p>\n
Yet he never got to run in it. A foot abscess forced Delgado to scratch him on the very morning of the classic at Churchill Downs, putting a sudden halt to everything that had been built up to that point.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a long road. We scratched him the day of the Derby, and it was frustrating. But it turned out to be for the best,\u201d recalled Randy Guy of High Step Racing, one of his co-owners.<\/p>\n
From behind and with remarkable conviction<\/p>\n
The Puma took time to regain his peak form. He resurfaced in the Haskell Stakes (G1) over a sealed, muddy track, finishing a non-threatening fourth. A month later, he offered far more encouraging signals in the Travers Stakes (G1), where he again finished fourth, this time against a field of immense quality led by Leading Change (Gun Runner), Napoleon Solo (Liam’s Map), and Golden Tempo (Curlin).<\/p>\n
That race was the green light his team needed. In Pennsylvania, he took another leap forward.<\/p>\n
With Javier Castellano in the irons, The Puma rated eighth through the early stages while Ponder and Dream (Uncle Lino) and Talk to Me Jimmy (Modernist) dueled for the lead through opening fractions of :23.27 and :47.69.<\/p>\n
The race began to shift when the front-runners faltered. Castellano didn’t wait. He launched the son of Essential Quality into a powerful, sweeping wide rally\u2014fanning out as wide as six deep\u2014and swiftly transitioned from trailing far back to joining the main contenders.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Javier made that move, I said, ‘He’s going to win.’ It was so quick,\u201d said Delgado. The trainer’s instincts were spot on. The Puma hit the top of the stretch already in command and quickly opened up a three-length advantage over his pursuers. The race appeared wrapped up, though one final test remained.<\/p>\n
Further Ado, the favorite and sole previous Grade 1 winner in the lineup, managed to escape from tight quarters, found daylight between horses, and began to chip away at the margin under Flavien Prat. But he had come with his run too late.<\/p>\n
The Puma sustained his momentum all the way to the wire to hold a half-length margin, stopping the clock for the 1800 meters in 1:49.10.<\/p>\n
Further Ado completed the exacta, while Sassmaster (Curlin), making his debut at the graded stakes level, finished third another length and a half back.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a good trip, but the winner got away at the top of the stretch, and I came too late,\u201d Prat explained. \u201cI was pinned between horses and had to wait a bit. After that, he responded well. Honestly, when we turned for home I thought I had enough to catch him, but he kept going and I couldn’t get there.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Puma’s record features a unique quirk. He has won just 2 of his 7 career starts, yet both victories have come in graded stakes company. The first came in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3)\u2014defeating Further Ado\u2014and now he has added the Pennsylvania Derby.<\/p>\n
In between those victories were that nose defeat in the Florida Derby, the forced absence from the Kentucky Derby, and the fourth-place finishes in the Haskell and Travers.<\/p>\n
Rather than inconsistency, his campaign was ultimately defined by circumstances that repeatedly delayed his confirmation.<\/p>\n
Bred by Hidden Brook Farm and Brian Kahn, The Puma is out of the Declaration of War mare Eve of War. He was purchased for $150,000 at the 2025 OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training.<\/p>\n
He races for the joint ownership group of OGMA Investments, High Step Racing, TCC Stables, YNG Stables, and JR Ranch.<\/p>\n
And his season may still hold a much bigger challenge.<\/p>\n
Delgado confirmed that he will evaluate taking him to the Breeders\u2019 Cup Classic (G1) on October 31 at Keeneland, though the final call will depend on how he recovers from his effort at Parx.<\/p>\n
There, age restrictions will no longer apply. Should he make the trip, he will face the top older horses alongside figures like Forever Young, the defending champion. But that decision can wait.<\/p>\n
The Puma had spent since March trying to claim the space that the Florida Derby seemed to have reserved for him. A foot abscess denied him the Kentucky Derby, and he needed two starts to regain his rhythm.
