On Thursday, Sept. 17, Philadelphia<\/a> City Council President Kenyatta Johnson (Second District) and Councilwoman Cindy Bass (8th District) announced the reopening of the Neighborhood Preservation Initiative Driveway Repair Program to provide additional funding for repairing shared residential driveways across the city.<\/p>\n

Since its launch in 2023, the program has served more than 12,700 Philadelphia households and completed nearly 350 driveway projects, with about $14 million invested in neighborhood infrastructure, according to a City Council news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The program is especially impactful in neighborhoods where multiple homeowners share responsibility for a single driveway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Driveway Repair Program reflects what City Council envisioned when creating the Neighborhood Preservation Initiative: investing directly in our neighborhoods and addressing residents’ everyday needs,\u201d said\u00a0Johnson in a statement shared within the release.\u00a0\u201cA safe, well-maintained driveway may seem like a simple improvement, but for the families who use it every day, it protects their homes, improves accessibility, and strengthens the entire block.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFamilies were dealing with crumbling, unsafe driveways and facing repairs that were difficult to coordinate and too costly for many to take on alone,\u201d said\u00a0Bass. \u201cMy office and I heard directly from residents who needed help, and I worked with my Council colleagues to turn those concerns into a real solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation (PHDC) administers the Driveway Repair Program, manages contractors, and oversees construction.<\/p>\n

The program’s reopening marks its third application cycle. Intake pauses between cycles allow the PHDC to process existing applications and complete approximately 40 projects already in the pipeline, according to the City Council release.<\/p>\n

In 2025, City Council allocated the final $50 million of the Neighborhood Preservation Initiative funding to Neighborhood Infrastructure Improvement Programs. Approximately $15 million remains dedicated to continuing the Driveway Repair Program for about two and a half more years of work.<\/p>\n

The program targets shared or private driveway repairs that historically fell outside traditional city infrastructure funding due to ownership and cost complexities.<\/p>\n
