WAND<\/a>) \u2013 Before students can solve a word problem or follow written instructions, they must be able to read.<\/p>\nAnd for many kids across the country, that\u2019s a challenge.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost kids are really not proficient readers. And that\u2019s been true in the United States for many years. It\u2019s gotten a little worse recently,\u201d said Dr. Mark Seidenberg, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor.<\/p>\n
The Nation\u2019s Report Card shows that only 31% of fourth graders are at or above the proficient level. Professor Dr. Mark Seidenberg says screen time and socioeconomic status contribute to this decline.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt affects the child\u2019s ability to become a reader, but it affects their ability to benefit from school,\u201d Seidenberg said.<\/p>\n
Another factor is learning experience.<\/p>\n
Thirty-one percent of fourth graders reported missing three or more days of school before taking the assessment in 2024.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re just doing parts of words and basic skills and not even getting to the good reading comprehension part,\u201d Seidenberg said. \u201cSo it\u2019s a broader range than it used to be. And that\u2019s one of the issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seidenberg explains that helping students become better readers doesn\u2019t stop when the bell rings.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudies are suggesting that parents are reading less with their children, their young children,\u201d Seidenberg said. \u201cThis is an important source of information about language in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
