Higher gas prices hit drivers where it hurts<\/p>\n

Gas prices are rising in Allegheny County, leaving drivers to make tough financial decisions as they feel the impact at the pump<\/p>\n

Gas prices are rising in Allegheny County, leaving drivers to make tough financial decisions as they feel the impact at the pump. <\/p>\n

“Things are expensive now, and it’s really starting to take a toll on the pockets,” said Jamaka Murray.<\/p>\n

Murray said higher gas prices are also affecting how she shops for groceries.<\/p>\n

“I look for cheaper things as far as food. I go to a brand that is sort of like it, but it’s not it. It’s like you have to pick and choose,” she said.<\/p>\n

Others, like Lauretta Guerin, expressed shock at the price per gallon. <\/p>\n

“Well, I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you. Just shocked. I’ve never seen it this high, and, boy, I hope it doesn’t get any higher. It just needs to go lower,” Guerin said.<\/p>\n

Risa Kumazawa, an associate professor of economics at Duquesne University, said the rising gas prices are linked to global events, including the Ukraine-Russia war and issues in the Strait of Hormuz, stemming from the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran.<\/p>\n

“Those are two of the biggest producers of oil, as well as what’s happening with the Strait of Hormuz, because if the cargo doesn’t get to travel normally and there’s a backup, it’s obviously going to affect the amount of oil that we are getting,” Kumazawa said. <\/p>\n

Kumazawa added that it is difficult to predict when gas prices will decrease. Meanwhile, some drivers are adjusting their spending habits to cope with the higher costs. <\/p>\n

“Definitely budgeting more for gas and just expecting those higher prices,” Ian Donnelly said.<\/p>\n

AAA reports the current average price for regular unleaded gas is $4.74.
