PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are investigating after a woman fatally shot another woman through an apartment door in North Philadelphia early Tuesday morning.

Police later learned the woman who died was a resident who lived in a different unit of the building on West Girard Avenue, by 16th Street.

Whether she was intentionally trying to break into someone else’s apartment, or she was confused and at the wrong door, remains under investigation.

Police say the apartment door was locked and required a key code for entry.

Philadelphia police received a 911 call around 3 a.m. that a woman was breaking into a first-floor apartment.

Arriving officers heard a gunshot coming from inside the building.

Police say a woman had gotten into the building and was trying to get into a first-floor unit, where inside was a woman in her 50s.

At some point, the woman — who later died — had a conversation with a security guard. Investigators did not share what was said.

“Preliminary information is she’s trying to enter that apartment, and then there is a shot fired from inside through the door, striking her,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Police arrived to find an unresponsive woman bleeding heavily from her chest. She was taken to Temple Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman has not yet been identified but is also believed to be in her 50s, according to police.

“The door is a steel door. There’s no windows, so when you’re shooting through that door, you’re shooting blindly because there’s not a window — you can’t see — and there’s not even a peephole. Right now there’s a bullet hole, but we believe that happened as a result of this shooting. We believe that this woman got shot through the door,” said Small.

Investigators must determine exactly what happened and decide whether the shooting was justified.

The woman who opened fire is cooperating with the police, according to authorities. Officials say a semi-automatic handgun was found inside the apartment.

Police say the security guard is also being interviewed.

There are surveillance cameras in the building, and the footage will be part of the investigation.
