More than two decades after 20-year-old Sabrina Kahler vanished from Erie County, investigators say they have finally identified the man responsible for her disappearance and death.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday and Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz announced charges against 50-year-old David Heck of Indiana, Pennsylvania, following a lengthy investigation conducted in partnership with the 54th Statewide Investigating Grand Jury and the Attorney General’s newly established Cold Case Section.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, Heck was charged Monday with murder, rape, and kidnapping in connection with Kahler’s 2002 disappearance. He was taken into custody at his Indiana County home Monday night.<\/p>\n
Authorities allege Heck picked up Kahler from her family’s East 3rd Street home on June 24, 2002, after inviting her to go swimming. Kahler knew Heck through her boyfriend’s family, and the pair had gone swimming together previously.<\/p>\n
Investigators said Heck and Kahler first traveled to Eagley Park, where Heck became involved in a confrontation with his ex-girlfriend and several others. The two later stopped at Tasty Twist, where police briefly encountered them while responding to the earlier dispute.<\/p>\n
After leaving the ice cream shop, authorities say Heck drove Kahler to the Fairview Gravel Pits, a wooded area with several bodies of water. Witnesses reported seeing Kahler in Heck’s vehicle near the location.<\/p>\n
According to the grand jury presentment, Heck raped and killed Kahler at the site. A fisherman later reported hearing what he described as a “blood-curdling scream” coming from the area before encountering a man matching Heck’s description emerging from the woods alone.<\/p>\n
Investigators said key testimony from witnesses who had previously been reluctant to come forward helped build the case. Among those witnesses were two acquaintances of Heck who were with him in the hours after Kahler’s death.<\/p>\n
One witness told the grand jury he helped Heck move and bury Kahler’s body near Elk Creek Access. A second witness testified that Heck admitted to killing a young woman. Authorities also cited statements from a former cellmate who claimed Heck confessed to raping and killing a woman at the Fairview Gravel Pits.<\/p>\n

Despite extensive searches over the years, Kahler’s body has never been recovered. Investigators believe she was buried near Elk Creek Access, though changing terrain and flooding have complicated search efforts.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Sunday called the charges a significant milestone in a case that has haunted the community for nearly a quarter century.<\/p>\n
“A totality of evidence that included key grand jury testimony from previously reluctant witnesses led to a single conclusion,” Sunday said. “This brings some answers for Sabrina’s loved ones and the Erie community, but it is not a day of celebration as we have not yet brought Sabrina home.”<\/p>\n
Hirz said Kahler’s memory has remained at the forefront for both investigators and the community.<\/p>\n
“Sabrina Kahler has never been forgotten. Her family never stopped remembering her, and this community has never stopped seeking answers,” Hirz said.<\/p>\n
Kahler was officially declared deceased by a court in 2009. Her disappearance remained one of Erie County’s most well-known unsolved cases until the recent breakthrough.<\/p>\n
The case will be prosecuted by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General and the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.<\/p>\n
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and Heck is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n
