SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE\/WYOU) \u2014 A man has been charged with damaging a youth football field<\/a> that caused a number of issues, police stated.<\/p>\n

Police say the West Scranton Junior Invaders organization found surveillance video of a man, later identified as 43-year-old Steven Gilliland, vandalizing the youth football field.<\/p>\n

West Scranton Junior Invaders Fields and Groundsman Ryan Collins said a line in the press box area was cut, and the suspect was seen pulling it by hand from behind the press box around 40 feet toward the stand, trying to get the cable line ripped out of the ground.<\/p>\n

Collins added that electrical wires to their lights had been cut, one of their buildings had its padlocks cut off, and copper lines inside breaker boxes had been tampered with.<\/p>\n

Police located Gilliland and placed him under arrest. Gilliland then denied being the man in the surveillance footage and denied damaging the field; however, officers said he was wearing the exact same clothing.<\/p>\n

A search of Gilliland’s backpack found a flashlight, small pieces of copper wire, and electrical wiring, all consistent with the materials involved in the reported damage, as stated in the affidavit.<\/p>\n

Gilliland has been charged with damage to property and other related offenses.<\/p>\n
