Efforts to preserve affordable housing units in Erie received a boost Thursday after a judge approved a request to temporarily halt the tax sale of three Erie Independence House properties.<\/p>\n
Matthew Good Chief Executive Officer of HANDS informed Erie News Now that Judge Mead granted a Consent Motion to Stay the Upset Sale, preventing the properties from being sold while stakeholders work through a plan aimed at stabilizing the housing units and protecting residents.<\/p>\n
The motion, filed Thursday morning, outlines a path forward for the properties and was developed with input and support from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) officials. The pause provides additional time for those involved to pursue long-term solutions that would keep the units available for residents while improving the financial outlook of the properties.<\/p>\n
One of the next major steps will be for Erie Independence House to negotiate and finalize a management agreement with HANDS, an organization expected to play a role in overseeing the properties moving forward.<\/p>\n
